16-Bit Gems #10: EarthBound - A History (Commentary)
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of EarthBound's release in North America, Roo revisits his most popular video in order to share insight on his feelings toward the EarthBound community, Nintendo, and Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

Five Guys FTW!
I can't find BlackHat Raven on youtube
Sorry there CptShadow, I should have made it clear he goes by blkhatRaven.
What's with these losers shortening words in their handles anyway? Geez...
thank you, is there any other Youtube accounts you recommend relating to Mother? (Other then fangamer or starman)
or websites for that matter
Well, my favorite website as of right now related to EB is earthboundcentral.com. If there's any updates in the world related to the series, you'll find it there first.
On YouTube, if you haven't checked out EarthBound Saga, you need to do that. It's a purposefully low-rent sendup of EB that is just hilarious. Plus there's this particular version of "Wisdom of the World" played by the Devildom String Orchestra that is very moving. Perhaps one of my favorite fan versions of any Mother song, and it's for a real overlooked one to boot.
If I think of anything else, I'll comment here. But if anyone else has something to add, feel free to do so. Either here or on the forums.
I really enjoy your reviews. So will you do a ChronoTrigger and FFVI review at any point? And what of FFIV? Doooo tell!!
Also, add Reggae Dub to the list of musical genres the composer utilized. One example of that is the "Friendly Neighbors" track, another is the Hospital theme. Insanely awesome stuff.
Maxzb, I normally like to stick to the unhearalded 16-Bit games for my reviews, but I'll never completely rule out reviewing some of my favorite well known games from that era. It would likely be under a different moniker than that of a "16-Bit Gem" though.
What would you call it? 16 Bit Masterpiece or something? i too would like to see something of those. I love Squareenix RPGs and it would be awesome to see what kind of info you can show us and what your opinions are about these games.
16-Bit Diamonds, perhaps?
16-Bit Gold, maybe?
I also have to say that I am very satisfied with the EarthBound commentary.
Thanks, Roo!
If they did a EB remake it would have to look like this

maybe some touching up here and there.
keep your pants on..it's not real :P
Also, awesome commentary!
nice comentary.
About the Happy video game nerd and Wild guns. I mean, why don't you go ahead and review Wild guns. I mean, it's obvious that both of you have a very different style of reviewing and I think it would be great to see what you have to say as well as HVGN. I mean...I guess I get where you are going at with not wanting to tred in his wake as far as games go, but still, I dont think it's as much about the games as it is about your style. Well, I mean theg ame is important because if you wern't reviewing it, you wouldnt have a show...but...well, you get what I eman right? Well to each his own. It's really up to you and not me.
Dragon: I do understand what you're saying, and I see that Derek and I have somewhat different styles, though our core idea is the same (reviewing overlooked gems from the past). However, I figure it's just better to not step on any toes. I wouldn't want to personally offend him, and I think we all know the possible hornets nest you could stir up between YouTube fanbases when one person "plagarises" another (AVGN vs. IG, anyone?). It's ok, there are many many great underrated 16-Bit games to draw from.
Besides, his fanbase is way bigger than mine. He'd kick my ass.
i joined starmen.net back in 2000/2001 and i was apart of that community on Mirc which if any of you know is where the dorks go to talk to each other. Earthbound was the soft basis of our lives it was apart of my childhood hell i ran away from home to hang out with some of the admins (which was awesome) spoken of in the community as if it were a legend... it wasn't...they were great people. this game changed my life it put music into my very being. it's ideas and eccentric parts in which the earthbound machine is made of opened alot of doors within my mind...not just because i did alot of drugs in high school and drank alot of coffee..its actually an amazing piece of literature...if you haven't played this game...play it!...thank you so much roo
I nearly agree with your top 3 Super NES RPG's Roo. My favourite Super NES RPG (and favourite RPG outright) is Chrono Trigger, and EarthBound second. I'd have Final Fantasy IV third. I liked Final Fantasy VI a lot, but I felt it was a little overrated. That might sound odd to say, but I just felt it lacked that 'something' which made Chrono Trigger, EarthBound and Final Fantasy IV so good.
O hai, its Pellaken from youtube! You and I have the same top 3, and our #3 is identical, and we agree on how close they are too!
Offtopic, but the AVGN was never a serious review show. The first episode was really just a skit as well, since Rolf actually likes Simon's Quest.
Earthbounds advertisements were pretty bad. The problem was that a lot them didn't show the major features/attractions of the game itself. Mention of the "food-condiment" system would have attracted my eye as well as the battle system.
I don't remember seeing any screenshots in magazine ads, either. FFVI had a similar problem with its television ads. Chrono Trigger is probably the only game that got it right.
There were a couple of Chrono Trigger fan games. Square-Enix C&D'd them. And there is a fan multiplayer version of FFIV.
I'm learning a lot from you Roo and I love all the history you give us, especially on Earthbound. 16-Bit Gems is one of my favorite shows on the internet along with MatPat's Game Theory, you guys definitely do your homework.
So yeah...awesome history/review/commentary. Wanted to comment on this because I had just recently purchased my own copy of EarthBound. Loving the game, as I always have. And...also got the Sword of Kings in less than an hour of looking. :P
