16-Bit Gems #12: TurboGrafx-16 Retrospective & Ninja Spirit
In this episode, we not only take on an underappreciated game, we take on one from an underappreciated console... that's meta. Roo warms up with a history of the TurboGrafx-16, which spawned innovative firsts in gaming - like the TurbGrafx-CD and TurboExpress. Then he goes on to review Ninja Spirit, a classic arcade port that isn't afraid to smack you around a little. You know, like in the good old days of gaming.

Awesome vid, Roo. Never owned a TG16 myself, but i wish i had the chance to try one out. Look forward to your next one.
Thanks shades. The sad thing is, I never owned one as a kid either. I caught up to some games later on in college, but looking back, it did have a lot of good stuff. And did you see the deal on the TurboDuo in that commercial? They were practically giving the thing away with a wagonfull of games!
They were desperate at that point. They were trying to stand up against the SNES and Genesis. Obviously, we know how that turned out. At least you've had a chance to experience it.
Another good video. Thanks.
I, nor anyone I knew, owned a turbografx-16 in my neighborhood or school.
A pity, really. We were missing out!
I love Irem! They worked on The Guardian Legend, one of my favorite games!
Grappling hook? Perhaps you mean the chain-sickle? Or if I use the internet to cheat, kusarigama.
Looks like a solid oldschool game. :) Ilove those old arcadey games!
I saw the price for the TG-16 and didn't even ask for one.
Once you step into the (lamely titled) ''import scene'' of the PC Engine and it's CD rom attachment, you start finding that it's actually a really great console with it's fair share of exclusives. There are so many absolutely great HuCards for the PCE that never left Japan (most notoriously the arcade-perfect-port of Street Fighter II). It's pretty lame. There's a lot of CD games that never made it to NA/EU regions too.
What's slso worth mentioning, is that if you're a 2D shooter/shump fan, the PCE is only rivaled by the Saturn.
I loved my TG-16. I actually felt it was my favorite console of the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and TG-16 in my ownership because the games gave me the feeling of playing games as how they probably would be if I were playing a Japanese import, and I'm not sure why I felt that way when the SNES had a much larger library of my favorite games. Every time that I'd turn on my TG, and play Keith Courage, Bonk's Adventure, Cratermaze, Ninja Spirit or even China Warrior, I felt immersed and not in the real world anymore. Later getting to play Vigilante, Bloody Wolf, Bonk's Revenge, Aero Blasters, and beating them all as well, I had such good times and memories. Even if I was one of the only people in my family or friends who would play them. It -was- neat that one of my older cousins would actually request to borrow my TG 16 and Bonk's Adventure over the weekends, although I've never recalled her playing any other video game before then.
On the subject of Ninja Spirit, those weapons felt soooo good to use. The powered up bombs were my personal favorites for boss killing, but everything else was a satisfying screen sweeper. I can testify to "The Fall of a Thousand Dooms" as being the hardest ordeal I've been through in any TG game I'd played. It's frustratingly hard, even if you have the paths memorized for the least dangerous route. It actually felt like living a nightmare, when I was a kid.
I had always wanted to own a TurboDuo, but finding one for sale back then was very hard to do. I've seen the Super CD add-on in person, however, but for $399, how does a small kid convince their parents to buy something like that for a console that they have already payed for? I didn't even bother to try. But, I was happy with my TG 16 for many years.
And yes! Irem. <3
