16-Bit Gems #16: Alien Soldier (Genesis/Mega Drive)
Roo explores one of the best run & gun games ever made - and one that didn't originally make it to America - with Alien Soldier. This game has it all: Tons of bosses, great weapons, a cyborg chicken... In fact, you could call the game not just a gem, but a "treasure". Yuk yuk yuk, thanks folks, we'll be here all week. Try the veal!

I'm from the midwest...and yes i crapped my pants...excuse me for a momment.
No pants crapping here, but that game looks pretty awesome!
Did I hear you say that is on the VC?
I may have to look into that.
Defication is always a goal of mine in a review.
Yep, it's on the VC. I'd certainly look into it - it's a really satisfying game.
You wanna know the irony? I know not of this Treasure Co. LTD. but every one of there games you showed I actually like a lot.
Oh, and what was that one game you showed at the begining. (the one you coughed the name of. I couldnt cath it and it sounded like you said "Legend of Integers". Now Im pretty sure there isn't an RPG that focuses on the Exploits of whole numbers...but I could be wrong.
Haha, I probably should have been a little more clear there. The cough was for Xenogears - a nice enough RPG for the PS1 that frequently gets bogged down in it's overly dramatic story involving life, the universe, and everything.
Treasure does it again! Or did as that game came out quite some time ago. Hadn't heard of it before, but I really like the weapon distribution and the special abilities. And twenty plus levels? Thats a lot more beef than a lot of games in the genre delivers so I'd say its a certified 100% 16 bit gem!
Reminds me that I do still need to beat Xenogears... brb, haha.
Great stuff! Top notch!
I always liked Treasure games. The first one I played was Ikaruga and it blew me away. Alien Soldier looks fantastice, I already have it downloaded and I will play it very soon :D.
Looks like someone got a hair cut
It's rare when you catch me with a game I've never actually heard of but you did so on this occasion. Me thinks I'm going to give this one a whirl. Nice review.
By the way Roo, this is off-topic but your Hitch Hiker reference reminded me: Have you ever read either of Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently novels? If you like the Guide I'm sure you will dig them as well.
Forty-two man, Forty-two.
ZombiePaul: I know of them, but I've never read them. I really need to get on my reading list again.
CptShadow: I've had many people note that recently (both online and in real life). I never realized how much of an effect my unruly mop had on people.
Awesome game. I actually played this game when it came out (its not so bad to live in Europe sometimes..) and the controls feel awesome. Its very similar to Gunstar Heroes but the main guy and the enemies are so much bigger. In fact my main problem with it its that being used to GH, avoiding enemies and bullets felt much harder to do.
Very nice Gem. You didn't show me something new this time but you did remind me of the existence of this game Roo :)
