16-Bit Gems #5: Secret of Evermore (SNES)
It's the triumphant return of 16-Bit Gems!
How great was Secret of Mana... er, Evermore? Better than you may remember. Roo will guide you down memory lane and challenge the discontent you may have felt from this game being released instead of Secret of Mana 2. So why wasn't the sequel to Mana brought to the West? Was Evermore really the only Square RPG never released in Japan? And what game-lengthening tactic really sticks in Roo's craw? Find out in this video review of Secret of Evermore.

I actually think Evermore is a much better game then both SOM 1 and 2.
Hm, Secret of Mana holds a special place in my heart.
I couldn't really ever get into Secret of Evermore.
I really liked SOE but unfortunately none of my friends agreed with me they all loved som i didn't and i still don't every once and a while someone tries to rope me into playing som...does som have marty mcfly?..no...exactly
Dissidia is awesome...
Funny enough I have this game, I tryed to beat but my save file was deleted. I started it up again and from what I remember I found this game alot better when I was little. Still tho, it fun to play over again but what I enjoy most was your dog. How he changed form big killer beast to.... toaster.... yea. Anyway, always good to see evermore get some love.
Good Stuff :)
There was not room for a third but player two COULD control the dog. This made some boss fights easy; let the dog, as your friend, attack while you hid in a corner. We usually only did it if the Boy got low on HP.
Surprised to hear you dismiss the soundtrack. I have always found it to be fantastic. It's just that it's different than the other two greats you mention. It doesn't want to achieve the same things those games' scores do. Instead, it succeeds brilliantly at it's own, spooky goals.
This was one of my favorite games growing up. Now, I'd put it in my top 10 easily, and third in my list of Super Nintendo RPGs (Mario RPG, Earthbound, then Evermore). Great game! Seriously, everyone who hasn't played this and loves SNES RPGs should play it.
Since the last time I watched this, I was able to ask one of the developers why they didn't include two player on the Gamefaqs forums.
Turns out they wanted to, but kept running into bugs they couldn't figure out how to fix, caused by two player support. But looking back, he said they really wished they had put two player support in.
At least there's that Rom hack that puts two players support in. I have no idea how well it works, since I haven't ever tested it.
Can't wait to try it.Just got FF7.Love it.
you didnt like the FF fighting game on the psp? oh well, to each his own i guess. anyways, great review... not that i've exactly come to expect anything else in the past couple hours. consider me part of this forum-type-website-thingy!
