Our 3rd major video game marathon has ended a success! And we have so many people to thank for it:
- Everyone who donated, no matter the size of the donation - without you, all this would have been just three crazy guys playing 20-year-old video games over the course of a weekend.
- Our sponsors, with a very special thank you to Andrew from videogameauctions.com, who not only generously matched large donations throughout the marathon, but also spurred the chat room with his presense.
- Our chat moderators and friends of the site, who kept things lively but controlled throughout the marathon. They represent sites including RetrowareTV, That Guy With the Glasses, Blistered Thumbs, the Escapist, and many more.
- Dane Byers, who provided some of the equipment we used to record the stream, making it as professional as possible.
- Ustream, for streaming us on their Gaming Section page throughout the marathon.
- The American Cancer Society, for the great work they do in not only cancer research and prevention, but helping those afflicted with it to live as normal lives as possible.
We're very excited that we reached our goal, but we're not quite done yet. Some people have still expressed an interest in donating to the cause despite the marathon's end. Therefore, we've extended the donation period through Christmas Day, December 25th. So if you find that you have a few dollars left over after holiday shopping, feel free to extend the total raised for the American Cancer Society. So again, for those who have donated and those who will - thank you so much. Until next marathon...
Again, we give a huge thanks to the 2011 CD-i Marathon's sponsors:
We're looking to raise at least $10,000 for the American Cancer Society. Though you've likely heard of this organization, we encourage you to look more into what they actually do - it's very impressive. On top of providing funding for cancer research, they also work hard to educate the populace on prevention, as well as provide support for those living with cancer. We've looked very in depth to find a suitable beneficiary this year, and not only is the ACS worthy, but they run a tight ship. Cancer is a disease that affects virtually every family in one way or another, and we're very glad that we're able to help them with their cause.
The marathon itself will involve 60 hours of mind-bending fun (?) with the Philips CD-i - which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this December. Being one of the first video game consoles to use CDs as a media format, you've likely played some of its titles even if you didn't own the system: Dragon's Lair, Myst, 7th Guest, Flashback... there are some really good titles on the system.
But there's also the craptacular games you're likely more curious about. Don't worry, we have those too - including all 3 Zelda games and Hotel Mario. So help us out! Spread the word far and wide! Be here when the fun begins at 12 PM EST on Friday, December 9th, 2011! It's a painful Christmas with the Clan of the Gray Wolf: 60 hours of CD-i. Prizes galore. Fun to be had by all. And of course, a very important cause that deserves our attention. More info below the page break...
The Official Milestone List - We'll play these games when each fundraising goal is met
$1,000 - Link: Faces of Evil
$2,000 - Burn Cycle
$3,000 - Mad Dog McCree 1 & 2
$4,000 - Hotel Mario
$5,000 - Weekly Wringer Live! Diddy Kong vs. Luigi Smash Bros. Death Battle!
Already marked, and booked it on my calendar... And oh, I'm going to store pop corns and sodas too. It's going to be great to watch a 16-Bit Gem Marathon, much like what I did with the NCIS and Big Bang Theory. :D
....I will pray for your souls. I also commend you for the absolute torture you are prepared to put yourself through, all for charity. God bless you all, my friends!
...also....how exactly do you...'play' Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia?? What the--??
Will this marathon be available "non-live"... I have 3 insane exams to complete around the 12th, so I really can't watch it on the 9th... But I don't want to miss it either...
I just want to say to everyone partisipating in this Thank you very much! I have had many close friends and family affected by Cancer. Recently my Father and Grandmother in the last year. I just want to say thanks and that these guys really are doing an amzing thing! I really hope you make your goal
It was great fun. I almost watched the whole marathon (ok, i slept for 4 hours every night :D), but couldn't watch the end, because i had to work today what was incompatible with the time difference :(
Did you finish Lost Eden and/or 7th Guest? I turned off when you were planying the awesome looking but "not easy to play" golf game.
Congrats on making your goal, it is nice to see a different charity get some money.
While watching the chat I noticed that people commenting if there were any "good" games for the CD-i or wanting the game to be changed to a better game, myself the only game that I would call bad was Dark Castle but the rest of the games I saw looked okay.
Wow, I am pleasantly surprised that you managed to make the amount! I thought you were just being optimistic and aiming really high, but you guys pulled through. :)
I was around for, at least 9 hours, and I really enjoyed myself with the games, the comedy and even the old game-facts. The greatest part of it was that it was all for a great cause. I wished I had been able to give some cash, but I'm low on it, however I did spread the message and I really hope it worked for something.
I agree with what Commodore & Roo constantly mentioned: everyone's been afected by cancer and there was definitely good reasons to choose that kind of organization to do an event for.
Anyhow, kudos to you guys for the great effort (3 days is a great achievement). Keep it up, you really are an inspiration.
PD: Props to Andrew from VGA. I was around for many of the times when you donated and well, my hat is off to you, sir.
first of all, thanks to all that helped in some way for your efforts, that's a huge amount of money raised :)
Sadly I could not really watch the stream for the most part since it somehow constantly lagged out. The Hulk Movie and the Shooting game afterwards worked just fine, but after that it really started getting messy for me. I know others didn't have this problem, but I tried everything to solve it, it didn't work. I simply hope now, that there will be a highlights reel or something like that
Again, thank you for your efforts
edit: Oh, and, I'm really interested in the bag o' crap contents, will that be posted somewhere when the winners receive it? :)
This is beyond insanely cool. Will be tuning in for sure!

I'm now informing my fellow peeps at Nerdcore Now to somewhat support your project. I hope they respond cheerfully.

I'm sure at least portions of it will be made available after the fact

One other thing, Commodore sure knows his music.
So who won contest thingies and stuff? My internet connection (which SUCKS) died on me at the start of the 7th guest, and works NOW 1,5 days later :(
Congratulations!! Wow. Just....wow. You guys did it. .____.;
People....are so generous. It's really inspiring and moving! ;^;
