I'm not sure why, but I always want to put an accent on the e to make it Animé - strange desires - anyway, thought it would be good to have an anime thread on these forums as, let's face it - part of being a geek means you either like anime or have very strong opinions on the subject!
Personally - I love it. I'm watching it more and more with a lady friend of mine, as it turns out she's rather partial to it too. We're currently watching the following series and enjoying them all:
Bleach (obviously :P)
Ah! My Goddess (she loved World of Narue and this seems similar, if not better)
Shakugan No Shana (one that I loved in Japanese, now I'm loving rewatching in English - highly recommended)
What are your favourite animes and why? That question goes to contestant number 1 (Did you have Blind Date in America?)

I'm quite partial to One Piece, Wolf's Rain and Baka to test to shoukanju (My spelling may be messed up there) myself. Only One Piece is still going from those. Although, I am looking forward to the Toriko anime thats meant to be coming soon.
One Piece is there because I find it quite well written (in the non-dub), enjoyable, the voice actors are great (in the non-dub), and it's animation is awesome. Plus, Pirates with Superpowers? What's not to like?
Wolf's rain was the first anime I ever saw, and it really got me itching to see more. I like the plot, the artwork is amazing, and I find the characters to be quite interesting.
Baka to test is quite recent. A school decides to use chibi holograpghs of their students to fight, with their test scores determining their strength levels, to decide which class they are placed in. Hilarity ensues.
Bleach would have been up there, if it weren't for one thing.

THE

ARCS

Lol - I agree with you on the filler arcs - they're less than interesting, and what makes it worse is that I can't just skip over them as they're referenced in the canon arcs. Ah well.
One Piece is also great, watched the few 30 or so episodes and quite enjoyed it, although I wasn't too keen on the art style, the story more than made up for that.
Just watched 5 centimeters per second a few days ago, that is one amazing looking anime - especially in 730p

Oh man...what a great thread...
So, I'm just now watching Fullmetal Alchemist, which I really enjoy. Bleach is enjoyable, but since I'm not a teenager, some of it is a little lame.
I've got to say that Fullmetal Alchemist is my current favorite. It's very well written, the themes are mature and the story is well crafted.

I have to agree on the Fullmetal Alchemist, though I haven't been able to watch but a few episodes.
I also enjoyed watching one of the Lupin III movies (The Castle of . . um . . something that starts with C).
It's fun watching a thief do (aside from thievery) the right thing with a friend that really likes guns.
Cowboy Bebop looks interesting, but I've only seen part of an episode.
Aotherone that caught my interest that I haven't been able to watch is Samurai Champloo. The competetitive chemistry of the two main characters drew me in.
Akira was cool, but I would have to watch it again to remember what it was about.
That's all I got. Nothing obscure.
I've been enjoying Samurai Champloo lately as well. I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop...I wish there was more of it.
I'm currently watching Darker than Black, which is a hard-boiled sci-fi noir series. It's very enjoyable, but not for kids.

I remember darker than black being on at my uni's anime club. Unfortunately, I missed a few episodes, so I was completely lost when it was on.
Wondering: Should we treat this as the anime and manga thread, or should I start up a separate one for manga?

Just watched Akira for the first time tonight - I know I'm a bit behind :P Anyway, 'twas rather good - I really liked it. I didn't really know what to expect as I prefer to never read a synopsis before watching a film, and was pleasantly surprised by the storyline (always thought it was about bikes!). The art style reminded me a little of Barefoot Gen and Paprika, two other classics (although I'm not huge on Paprika), and if you haven't seen it, I'd highly recommend it. Oh and if you haven't seen the other two, then I'd highly HIGHLY recommend Barefoot Gen as a piece of cinematic mastery, but it's a very sad storyline, so be prepared for tears and plenty of emotion - I first watched it on the bus on my Archos - boy was that embarassing!

I'm incredibly picky when it comes to anime. As a rule, I really don't watch it. However, a lot of the Studio Ghibli movies are incredible pieces of filmography-- like Toroto, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service. As well as Perfect Blue, Ninja Scroll and Akira. To me, I will watch a well-produced, mature-themed (not the sexual connotation) anime if it comes on the Sundance Channel. But most of the television shows are inane pap.
The cut off bug is back. >_<

I do like Bleach and Naruto but I'd rather read the manga to avoid all the nasty filler.
As for anime the ones that I remember enjoying the most are Dragon Ball in my childhood and in the more recent years Death Note and Beck. However my favorite anime of all time is Golden Boy. Anyone heard of it? It's just 5 episodes and you should really check it out if you have the spare time ;)
Seen some of these listed already, but hey, they are still on my fave list: (In no particular Order)
Lupin the III - Funny, corkey Season 2 on for TV, but the movies are what shine for me, The Castle of Cagliostro in particular.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Grew up watching the anime. Worth checking out the BLU-Ray remake, masterfully done!
Wolfs Rain - Honestly dont know why I like this one soo much, much better Anime out there, but still one of my personal favorites.
Dragon Ball - Dragon Ball Z - Who didnt watch this show.... I wish they stopped after Dragon Ball Z, they kinda just keep it going..... I grew up watching DBZ first, but I have to say, I liked Dragon Ball far better.
Big O - GIANT ROBOTS!
Gundam Wing - Giant Robots!?
Death Note - Love the story and plot twists
Hated Evangelion unfortunately (oh the woes of knowing the psychology on there is bull AND not really liking mech anime). Although I really do need to get around to watching Lupin III.
Also, just found out series 2 of baka to test is in production... *Geek out*

Isn't Lupin the werewolf from Harry Potter? There's an anime about him? He is a pretty awesome character, though.

Same name different character. If im not mistaken Lupin is French for Wolf, which would make sense for the Harry Potter Character, and why sometimes they refer to Lupin the III as the Wolf.
I enjoy a lot of anime, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Fist of the North Star that is a staple for anime fans, it's just that good, there are way to many good shows to name but the thing that kinda bugs me is that not a lot of people know of older shows or movies such as Astro Boy, Kimba, Gotcha man, and so on
Don't get me wrong Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece are pretty good but there are a bunch of other shows to watch

I could always throw out Gigantor, but I have never had the opportunity to watch it.
Gigantor is pretty good, i watched an episode or two when Toonami ran their "Giant Robot Week" back when Cartoon Network was still good

Ya that is how i first saw Gigantor as well, late night on cartoon network before Adult Swim was on every night.
On a semi related note, here is a funny Lupin the III video music video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxNw1bgH4dQ
Lupin III is kind of like a nascent Bebop. lots of fun
Lately I've been watching DB Kai.. yeah I know.. I hated Z because of how slow paced and fillertastic it was, which is why I do find myself enjoying Kai.
Also on my recent watch list FMA:Brotherhood, and rewatching Ergo Proxy.
My favourites though have to probably be Bubblegum Crisis (not the remake), Haibane Renmei, and Last Exile

I don't get why people hate DBZ or that they didn't like how it was paced originally, i liked it, DBZ Kai is ok but how it was then is better, i didn't mind the filler episodes where Goku goes to Hell or Him and Piccolo learn how to drive, does it add to the story No but it still fun to watch

I suppose I should define what I meant by filler. I was fine with a lot of the sub plots and tangents the story went on, and yes I do miss some of them that aren't in DB Kai. What I mean primarily by pacing and filler in DBZ are the big fight scenes where they spend litterally 90 % of an episode charging up a super attack, only to have it blocked, or miss.
Just sitting there listening to Goku scream for 20 minutes isn't entertaining.

@MWM;
No but I swear to god it looks really farmilliar. I'll have to send the pic to my friend Sarah, she's constantly sending me links to series I might like so if I can't place it, she should be able to.
A Couple of my favorite series that I haven't seen listed are
Urusei Yatsura- It's the first series by Rumiko Takahashi, who also created Ranma 1/2 and (unfortnatly) Inuyasha. It's also her best it's weird and quirly and never tries to be too much. it's sci-fi romantic slapstick at it's best.
Paranoia Agent- This is one of my favorite psychological thrillers EVER. check it out.
MWM - Darker Than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini this is a sequel to Darker than Black.

Actually the real huzzah should go to MWM.. I've actually never seen either Darker than Black, or it's sequel. What I do have is an uncanny ability to find things based sometimes on as little as a picture.

Has anyone been watching the new Evangelion Movies? I must say http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Evangelion-2.22-You-Can-Not-Advance-Blu-ra... is very Epic
I am backing up data/cleaning out my downloaded files folder and found that image and it's been there for awhile, and with images that is how I find some Anime shows (like Soul Eater), but that was the only image I have found that didn't list the show it was from.

I saw Evangelion 2.22 You can (not) advance in theaters a few months back. I LOVED it. I just picked up my own copy of it on DVD today. I have to say, I'm really happy with how Anno is condensing and changing the series. I've been a fan of the original series for a while now, but I have to admit it is flawed, more so as it goes along.
I wanted to see it in theaters but didn't. Man do I regret that, I can only imagine what it looked like on the big screen(although it does look nice in Blu-Ray on my big screen). I too was a fan of the original series, but am happier with the direction they are taking in the Movies. It’s going to be a very long wait till the next release =x
I really like what they did with the music in this last movie. Every battle is just epic to both the eye and ears.
Actually, my friend bought me the blu-ray version of Evangelion 2.22 as a late birthday present. can't wait to watch it later :3
Speaking of Sci-Fi anime, has anyone ever seen Martian Successor Nadesico? it's a sci-fi comedy that does a great job of balencing the two genres. Basically the super short synopsis is earth is at war with aliens (with a twist) and since the military is making no progress a major corporation makes its iwn battleship and staffs it with quirky civilians that almost fit the job.
I haven't watched too much Anime in the past few years, I did however buy the entire FMA Brotherhood collection, which to me was a great buy, it's something about the interactions between the Elric brothers that feels fairly organic. Have a few collections of others kicking around in a storage unit at the moment, room-mates aren't big on the stuff and I don't own a television.

Aestolia, that was awesome! thanks for sharing.
Now that my semester is virtually over I have stress free time to watch anime again. yay.
Some of the series:
Noir (girls w/ guns at their best)
Sgt. Frog
Shin-Chan
Clanaad
and
Death Note. almost forgot how good this one was.
I just watched Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind http://www.imdb.com/media/rm119585280/tt0087544.
Curious if anyone else has seen this. My brother was telling me about it for a long time, I finally gave it a chance and it was actually really good. I was thrown off by the Disney logo that is on it, but apparently they didn't change anything from original other the the voice acting. Speaking of which the voice acting was very good. Patrick Stewart, Uma Thurman and Edward James Olmos play there parts quit well.
The only other Hayao Miyazaki I have seen is Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079833/) quickly became one of my favorite movies which was also very good. I know hes done a ton of movies over the years that I need to get caught up on.
Anyway, if you haven't seen Nausicaa its worth checking out!
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind one of many great Studio Ghibli movies, just wish I could of bought it when the rental store closed down but all the Anime was sold fast. As for Disney they do the English dubs for all Studio Ghibli movies and try to keep it the the original but sometime lines needs to be changed for North America.
For Lupin the 3rd only knew him by name but found the movie Dead or Alive in a clearance bin at a small store in a mall for $2 each or 3/$5 and I want to watch more Lupin the 3rd movies.

I'm not a huge animé fan and that's probably due to the fact that I tried to fit in with the other animé folks at my high school, I tried to attend this Animé club they had going, my sister stayed in for 2 years but I only stayed for one meeting. The reason for it, they denounced some animé I liked and enjoyed as some lower class animé, they asked around what we could do to spread the name of the club to get more members, I had an idea which I personally believed could help, it was to make Kirby designs for shirts, some laughed at me for the idea, some scoffed, my sister was embarassed for some stuck up reason, Kirby was nearing his time to getting "Kirby Right Back At Ya!" in a year or two afterwards, they have yet to mention it. Guess what idea came up AND ACCEPTED WITH PRAISE literally after my Kirby nomination? It was Sailor Moon of all friggin' animés, Sailor Moon and it was unanimous for designs regarding SM for shirts and hats and whatever else. I ditched the place after a few more praises for shows more leaned toward the girls, grants there WERE more girls in the club but it was by maybe 4 or 5 more than the total amount of guys.
They had ideas of cosplaying a year after for a day and even a straight week of wearing cat ears or something like that. I just hated that stuck up atmosphere that they had lingering around every single one of them, whether it were to look down at me personally or just at the entire school. I didn't like the people there for that reason and didn't attend any more sessions after school.
Animé that I like but haven't really followed episode by episode:
Shaman King, Dragonball Z, and FMA
I gave Naruto a shot, used to enjoy it until I got tired of all of the fillers and inconsistencies, such as Naruto was supposed to be taught by one of the greatest ninja in the land for 2 years just to STILL suck and get his ass handed to him match after match, it was until the FINAL round where he would win, screw that nonsense, I understand against the higher classes, but he was going up against other lower classes and still losing. I know a lot has happened and I even watched the full Pain match against Naruto one on one, even with the Hinata scene and the overall result of the match. Hadn't watched much before or after, I know some folks will be able to write out an entire 5 page essay as to why I shouldn't have quit as early as I did, but that's my personal decision and as long as there's continuing fillers and more inconsistent capabilities, I'm not getting back in. Another thing I must point out as to why I don't follow animé as much as I would, it's the characters they tend to make, there's a huge commonality between the main cast in every animé, can you spot all of them? By such, you've already understood every character in almost every animé without even having to watch it. Another thing I've noticed is the way they talk whether it's dubbed or not, the unrealistic, arrogant attitude they have over EVERYTHING as if it's all action packed awesomeness even over just taking a shit, I'm sorry but that is what bothered me the most is the way they speak in every situation. That's why I liked Full Metal Alchemist, it was to an extent, it didn't involve everyone like *cough*DB - DBGT series*cough*, it wasn't over everything like YGO or Pokémon, I hope you're getting what I'm trying to explain here.
