This isn't as much about in-game exploits as it is actual copies of the game itself. It was ridiculously difficult for me to hang onto copies of this game, thanks to actions of "friends" of mine. When I was younger, I would hit a local pawn shop for good deals on SNES & GameBoy games. The best deal I've ever made (and probably ever will) was for a copy of my all-time favorite game: The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. I suppose the guy working the counter was in a good mood; I offered him $5 and a copy of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie (the game) for LttP, and he agreed. Unfortunately, my luck with the game began and ended right there.
After many happy years with the game, my SNES broke and a friend asked to borrow it. I agreed, and the guy kept it for months. His family decides it's time to move to Iowa, and he thinks it's ok to keep my copy of LttP since my SNES doesn't work; that's what he told me, anyways. Bye-bye LttP.
Fast-forward a few years down the road: the GBA is released, and Nintendo announces Link to the Past + Four Swords. I manage to get my hands on the GBA, and get LttP/Four Swords as a gift not long after. Man, I loved that game. I loved the extra scavenger hunt-style quest to learn the Whirlwind Sword Attack. Lots of fun. Another friend of mine wanted to borrow this game for a bit, so I let him. Big mistake. He held onto it for an extended period, despite me asking for its return Over 9000 times. I never recovered the game.
At least no one can steal my Virtual Console download of the game, I suppose. Nothing beats the original SNES cart, though.

Don't jinx yourself because the wii's updates might have some bug in the near future (again for some) and wipe out games downloaded, I suggest you save the game on a memory card or something (if that's possible). I downloaded the game on an emulator after leaving the game for GBA in my GBASP at my mom's place. I'll need to go get that in a week or two.

I love A Link to the Past! It's my favorite Zelda game. Yes. I like it more than The Ocarina of Time. Take that, rabid fans!
But yeah, at least you were able to get it on the good old Virtual Console! Like Datleco said though, you might want to consider storing games on a memory card, too, if you want back-ups, or something. I have considered doing this, myself.

No reason not to, Wii only has like 88 MB of flash memory, and SD cards are dirt cheap with a lot more memory. Doesn't hurt to splurge a dozen blocks of memory ;[
So yeah, I don't usually lend games either, don't usually get em back when I do.
I know how that is, makes you lose trust in just about a lot of people when it comes to lending.
