This was originally going to go into another thread BUT I would've started to spam and throw it off topic, so I decided to start my own thread here, we can expand it (using a loose title) by labeling your own bloody animé whether it's funny, scary, or just plain weird and why we should check it out! Anyways, without further ado... In a sense, it's expected that it'd be dark and grim but using lolicons to throw you off, I've seen some cutesy characters have to deal with death and destruction (not counting Sailor Moon and CCS), the shows tend to be pretty short whether it's just telling a story and they're done (perhaps moving onto another animé), were just done or perhaps cancelled.
One animé I wanna check out because of how bloody it is (but it's used in the most hilarious ways) is called: "Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan" which translates into "Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan" or at least that's what Google tells me. They use everything that is out there and just makes it as cartoonish as possible, I laugh every time I watch little segments of the show on youtube and hope to watch the show in its entirety.

Hope you enjoy, it just comes out of nowhere and it's like this throughout the ENTIRE series, it gets better and weirder so you can tell they're having fun with it. I love these kind of animé but it reminds you that IT'S A CARTOON! You're supposed to be able to expand an entire world of your own with your own ideas and how it can differ from reality or how closely knit it is to reality, your choice, these fun animé is always going to be among the top of the list in my point of view.

Pipiru Piru Priu Pipiru Piiiii!!!
Dokuro-chan is alot of fun if not a touch disturbing.
In terms of dark / twisted / bloody anime. Two that I highly recommend
Bloody /Dark: Elfen Lied
Twisted: My icon's name sake: Serial Experiments Lain.
Also if you want one that's just plain dark, and extreemly hard to watch (imo): Grave of the Fireflies... I've watched it once, and it is REALLY good... But I don't know if I could watch it again.

I always dug Elfen Lied. Love that intro theme.
Anyways, you've got Blood, Bezerk, Hellsing, Vampire Hunder D (inc Bloodlust)... There are so many to talk about. Lots of good ones, too, not just obscure niche-ey shit.
Yeah Elfen Lied and Berserk were great series. What sucks is there was talk about a second Berserk animated series and a lot of fan support but it never got made. Seriously, you can push to have a second season of Big O made but not Berserk? Speed Grapher was another good one, Deadman Wonderland is a really good one made recently. I almost couldn't watch it cause the first episode stretched my powers of suspended disbelief too far (over a court hearing of all things. Aliens, cat girls, losers attracting harems of women I can believe, but that was almost too much). Angel Beats is another good one, it seems really laid back and cheerful but the underlying story is really sad.
A good classic example of dark gorey anime is Genocyber, which is unfortunately one of those series that never got finished. There's this one scene where... well it's hard to explain without spoiling it but lets just say it involves man-handling organs that should be inside of one's body.
I always thought that Ninja Scroll's violence was pretty hilarious, too, even though it's not supposed to be. It's just...so bizarre, that...you can't help it. Just look up 'Tessai's Thirst' on YouTube, and....that's probably the prime 'What the Fuck?!' example....I dare you to watch that and not laugh.
Otherwise, I don't really watch extremely violent anime. Even though it's 'just a cartoon', and fake anyway, there's plenty of stuff that I'd rather not touch. I will agree that Vampire Hunter D is good. Is does have some bloody violence, and the first movie has...a couple of pretty excessive parts, but it's still good. Also, Michael McConnohie on the dub!
I've heard that Grave of the Fireflies is great, and I'd like to watch it. But it makes people cry. ;___;

Grave of the Fireflies if I knew what the content was about I would of not watched it, I don't like those types of movies/shows.

Grave of the fireflies, oh my god. Definately a good anime, but I will NEVER watch it again. I just refuse to do that to myself.
It goes on the shelf with movies like:
Saving Private Ryan
Behond All Borders
Boys Don't Cry
Yeah.. definatly a good anime. If you're into that genre of anime I'd recommend Barefoot Gen. Way way way less depressing.

Bloody,
You should include Higuarshi no Naku Koro ni/Umineko no Naku Koro ni. If you don't believe me, then watch it yourself.

I watched Fist of the North Star many moons ago...Yeah, it's...violent. I remember Ken being seriously injured and almost killed, and one guy's...head exploded, I think.

Speaking of Fist of the North Star, and Vampire Hunter D, Toyoo Ashida, who directed the FotNS movie (the first one, anyway) TV series, and the first VHD movie, has died. He was 67. ;___;
