I have been wanting for a long time to purchase the game Earthbound, but it seems to be a little too expensive. Can someone sell me a copy that is less than 100 dollars? If you can I will be very greatful.
I've given up on getting a copy of the game. I want it but not that bad. It would be very difficult to find a copy of the game at a low price. I suggest you try hunting in rummage sales. People in flea markets usually know what they have and will not sell it for cheap. If someone sells it cheap the resellers usually get there early and get it first. Rummage sales should be beneficial you will find other gems even if no Earthbound. Just get there early :D
I don't know. I like the game. Never played it to the end and it would be nice to own a copy even if it doesn't come in the big box or has the strategy guide.
If you can ever get a copy of the game, it is definitely worth it. It's a great game! There's just...nothing else like it, and I mean that in a good way.
But yeah, it's getting difficult to find one for a decent price....If only Nintendo would just re-release it somehow. There are fans who would love that, even fans that already have or played the game. Sigh...
If Nintendo really does modify the game, would it change the game? Well....by definition, yes. If music is altered or replaced, that's a significant difference right there. Does that mean the new music would be 'bad'? Well, no, but fans love the game and its music so much that this would upset many fans. Who knows, you'd probably even have fans who would refuse to buy the altered version because it's not the 'real' thing. Think about what Lucas did, and keeps doing, with the Star Wars Special Edition; fans generally hate it, or don't prefer it, and just overall wish it had never been done. The same thing would probably happen here; fans would just want Nintendo to release the original game, and nothing more. Would some fans rather have nothing than an altered version re-released? Some, probably.
There are no doubt fans who would agree with you, in that they'd rather have an altered version with some new music, than nothing at all. The thing is though, there would likely still be the lingering fact that it's not the original that they played years ago, and it's not a good feeling to know that their beloved version was replaced with something similar, but not all the same, and the original possibly never to be seen again. :/ Again...think about what Lucas keeps doing with Star Wars; he doesn't want the original theatricals to be remembered, evidently, and is more or less trying to wipe them from history, and...just keeps making more releases with more changes. It's not exactly the same, or for the same reasons as Nintendo would if they had to alter the game, but you see my point.
If Nintendo got Keiichi Suzuki to return and compose new music, I think that's the only way most fans would find it almost universally acceptable. That's definitely the way I'd prefer it be done, if...Nintendo feels they absolutely 'have to' replace some music. No, it....wouldn't be the same, but if Suzuki gives the same thought and care that he did before, I think he could make it work somehow.
I can't help noticed that it is mainly the fans that want a re-releases of this game, and how many people is that?
I don't think it's legal issues that is keeping Earthbound from being released but the market, why release the game when only a handful of people are going to buy it?

Well...why would someone who isn't a fan and knows nothing about the series specifically want or care about the game being re-released? :P
I don't have any idea how 'big' the fanbase is, numbers-wise. :P It is true the game didn't originally sell well, but the thing is, the game, and the series, have grown so much since the SNES days, and it's much larger now. I'd say it's more than 'just a handful,' but I suppose not in the same numbers as other huge series, no. However, if NoA did bring all the games here, and promote and market them right, I think potentially they could bring in even more people. Yeah, it'd be a gamble, as these things always are, but it may really pay off.
You do make a good point, and well, unfortunately, Nintendo blew a big opportunity when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released. Fans who could have been new to the series were introduced to Ness and Lucas there, but...well, there are no legitimate games in this country readily available for them to play. It also didn't help that NoA removed the Mother 2 demo from the game that was present in the Japanese version. Sigh...
Nintendo very possibly does still feel the market doesn't warrant any further releases, but what bothers fans is Nintendo refuses to just come out and say what their deal is. They simply refuse to even comment, and just ignore fans. I've heard of some at NoA even mocking fans, which may or may not be true, but still doesn't help. To be fair, as Roo also mentioned in his own Earthbound history and review, in our litigation-happy society, NoA probably does have some legitimate reasons to be concerned about legal issues with re-releasing the game. It may still be a little bit of a superficial excuse, but still...
To be honest, the reasoning that Nintendo isn't releasing Earthbound here because of some copyrighted music being in the game is lame, and unfounded.
Music sampling happens everyday in North America and nobdy goes to court over it. Also, the music in the game is different enough to not violate any copyright. If the reasoning in the articles was in fact true, artists would be in court defending their art everyday in this country.
Yeah, that's been mentioned here! :P It's unclear if that's the reason, as Nintendo hasn't officially said anything, but's a decent assumption. It makes sense, anyway, I guess.

Exactly. Even fleeting research into the plethora of court cases 2LiveCrew were a part of in the 80s and 90s shows that sampling is fine, as long as it isn't blatant. Most of modern media law is based around 2LiveCrew.
Not to mention, the majority of the music spoofed The Beatles. Michael Jackson owned the rights to their music for years, which is why it was never on the iTunes store. Being dead and stuff, he no longer holds those rights. Which is why it's now on the iTunes store.
If the music was the problem with Earthbound, then the holdup should be gone.
I think a majority of the problem is not as many people like it as fans of the game think. It isn't profitable for Nintendo to re-release it.

I got a copy of it for $1 at a yard sale recently. Sold it for $200. Never really liked the game.

Why? It's not worth more than about $200. Unless it's in the big box with the strategy guide.

How many songs in the game or things have problems with copyright? Will it really change the game if they modify it somehow?
They removed the Kawazaki things in Waverace. I'm sure they could do that with Earthbound...
I rather have that than nothing at all.

Thanks for the links Shirow. I'm reading right now. I'm sure with all the hype from the game even non fans of the games would buy it.
Edit: After reading all that I think cutting the stuff from the game would change things a bit too much.
