I'm surprised there isn't a comic book topic here.
Let's talk about our favorite comics, i haven't read that many but i'll list the few that i have
Supergod, Watchmen, and Scott Pilgrim, then a couple of One Shots
I have some questions to ask to those who are relatively new to comics:
What can companies do to draw you in?
Are they advertised to you enough?
Why haven't you gotten into comics or only just now started to read them now?
What do you think of the way they advertise comics?
What do you like or hate about the way they advertise?

As I said before "I don't like buying comics for the fact that the stories continues from one issue to another and not being able to get them all. (Example; I once bought a comic that was part 1 of 3 couldn't find part 2 of 3, than found part 3 of 3.)
But since you said books and listed Scott Pilgrim and Watchmen (which are graphic novels but can see why they are called comic books). I have read the first 5 volumes of Scott Pilgrim and will say watch the movie for the special effects and fight scenes and the books for the characters development.
I would like to buy Bone for the fact after reading old Disney Adventures with Bone in the 'comics zone' but the only complete collection I can find is black and white and after reading some of Bone on glossy colour pages it doesn't feel the same going colourless and to normal book paper.
Cheaper prices.
??? I avoid ads.
(Reread the start of this post.)
I now know how to order stuff when it isn't carried by a store and just hope it isn't discontinued.
Again ??? I avoid ads.

Growing up my source of disposable income was very inconsistent, so I often avoided buying single issues.
Now that I'm a twenty year old man child that's not much of a problem. I tend to collect trade paper backs of the books I like, simply because hauling long boxes full of comics can end friendships; especially if you move a lot. Another advantage to Trades is the lack of ads, which is really important for me in some cases, I remember this one issue of a Batman mini-series that had about *runs to book shelf* 4 ad pages in the first 14 pages on being a two page spread.
As far as the questionaire goes since I'm not really new to comics I'll answer the first one.
What can companies do to draw you in?
Well that really depends if there's a nice big cross over happening, or if there's stories I like in general. For instance Marvel's current big cross over Fear Itself that one I don't really care too much for and there's a few reasons... namely I don't like Thor or Captain America too much. I won't lie I'm more prone to read DC but I did enjoy Ultimate Spider-Man for awhile and Ultimate Fantastic Four.
Currently DC is prepping for a reboot of 52 books and I'm syched as hell, already have some reserved!
As far as what publishers can do to get more readership.... *Final Jeopardy music*

I don't buy any series of monthlies anymore, except for The Savage Dragon, which I've collected since....early middle school, I think. My God, it's been THAT long ago....
I used to buy tons of stuff; Spider-Man, Spawn, X-Men, The Maxx, G.I. Joe, and a lot of miscellaneous things. But tastes changed, and well, I wouldn't be able to buy that much stuff these days. Not that I had money when I was a kid either! I love comics; I just....don't buy a lot regularly anymore. I don't buy a lot of superhero stuff, although in recent times, I actually did buy a few choice titles in collected editions, and I may buy some collections of certain classics. I do regularly buy Blade of the Immortal, by Hiroaki Samura, when those books come out (usually one or two a year), and I've been collecting Fullmetal Alchemist, which is almost over! I've also been buying Empowered, by Adam Warren (although I fell behind on those, too), and the Penny-Arcade collections.
Other favorites would be Bone (thanks for mentioning that, White Mage!), Masamune Shirow books, The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City, TMNT (done by Eastman and Laird)...
Since I'm...not new to comics, at all, I guess I won't answer your questions, Cpt. Shadow, but you do ask some good ones!

Well I read some comics as a kid but I didn't read much besides what my older brothers would get. One was into mostly into Spiderman and X-men, the other was Fantastic 4 and X-Force. Didn't really have much contact with DC comics.
Now I recently got back into comics when they did the Darkest Night event, which was mainly Green Lantern. Oddly enough I knew jack shit about Green Lantern, but they just did the Rebirth and retold Hal Jordan's origins, so I caught up to some of the Green Lantern continuity and it became one of my favorite series. I also tried to catch up with the general DC universe continuity, reading Infinite Crisis and such, because I hardly knew anything about DC characters in general aside from Superman and Batman. So I mostly read DC comics now.
I've been trying to get my hands on more Warren Ellis comics since Linkara's plugs, Nextwave really pulled me in. I've also been trying to get into some of the major event comics like Crisis on Infinite Earths and 52, it's funny I'm trying to catch up on old continuity and they're about to scrap it all, but I don't have the money to keep up with all the new comics anyway. The only Marvel series I've really read any of lately is the Marvel Zombies.
I really don't see much advertising for comics at all besides the movies.
I've really only recently gotten into comics, and even now I mostly stick to graphic novels and trade paperbacks. The montly comics issues never seemes like a good buy due to ads, price, and the small amount of reading material they provide. I like Sandman, Top Ten, Transmetropolitan, Persepolis, 52, Marvel 1602, Black Orchid, Deadpool, Watchmen, Hellboy and the JMS authored Thor comics, to name a few.
Just write good stories. Simple, huh?
Either the advertising is non-existant or resides in places I never look, because nearly all the comics I've ever read I learned about through word of mouth, meeting a writer/artist at a con, or getting interested after seeing a movie adaptation.
I didn't care for the weirdness of the silver age or the faux 'maturity' of the 90s, so I never realized comics could be good until discovering Sandman
What advertisement?
Maybe fewer adds in the comics themselves? It seems like preaching to the choir, and annoying said choir at the same time
