So, David Yates, the director of most of the Harry Potter movies (he...did all of them after #3, actually...), has revealed he is working with the BBC to work on a Doctor Who movie.
Before you rejoice, know that he also states they are going to...sigh....'start from scratch,' and this "movie will not adhere to its small screen counterpart's continuity and will be, according to the trade, 'completely fresh approach to the material.'" And for those who think that IGN might have forged documents again,* no, it sadly seems not to be the case.
No. Just.....no...
First of all, this is completely unnecessary. The great thing about the revived series is that you don't need to know anything about the old show. Nothing. You can start from the very first episode, and run with it, and you'll be informed along the way of all the basic things you need to know, as you go along. Sometimes it does help if you are familiar with the old show, such as when old characters return, such as Sarah Jane, the Daleks, Davros and the Cybermen, but again, it's not necessary. That' a good thing. So, if they are thinking this is something that has to be done for a 'new generation' or something, that's bullshit. They've already proven they don't have to. They didn't say that was their intention; I'm just mentioning it. Besides, David Tennant and Matt Smith are the faces of Doctor Who for a new generation. Yes, I acknowledge Eccleston, too, and he was so awesome; but unfortunately, not as iconic as his successors. That's neither here nor there, though. :P
Secondly, isn't this going to potentially confuse a lot of people, if you have a TV series and then a movie based on the series, but apparently isn't really? Doing something more like this makes sense for properties that....barely have any actual, solid, unified continuity at all, like Batman, Spider-Man, etc., but for a series like Doctor Who, that just doesn't sound right. That would be like if they made an all-new Star Wars movie that was outside actual continuity. And the funny thing about that is, I asked a specific question about that very kind of thing in another thread! :D Anyway...
Third....what is the point of doing this exactly, anyway? I guess one could reply with 'Why not?' but that in itself doesn't answer the question of 'Why?' Making a(nother) Doctor Who movie isn't inherently a 'bad' idea; there are things I'm sure they could do that would be okay. One obvious solution would be tackling 'the Last Great Time War' and show us what happened there, since it's clearly such a major part of the series. I guess the problem with that though is, assuming the 8th Doctor regenerated into the 9th sometime during the War, they may not be able to get Eccleston to come back for that. From what I understand, he hasn't really liked talking about this experiences working on the show, and unlike other past actors who played the Doctor, he hasn't returned for other media, such as radio/audio dramas. So, uh, yeah....
Also, they already made two movies that take place out of continuity, and they seem to be largely forgotten, except by people who really know the show. And you know who played the Doctor in those movies, oddly enough? Peter Cushing. That's right. :O
I also do realize, and some fans will probably bring this up, since other universes do exist in Doctor Who, well then, maybe this is just an alternate Doctor! Yeah, I guess, but I'd rather they focus on the Doctor that already exists.
And fourthly...of all people, is David Yates the person who should be handling this?? Now, don't misunderstand; I like the Harry Potter movies, for the most part, and I think he largely did a good job. That doesn't mean I think he'd be perfect for Doctor Who though. That just....doesn't ring well with me. Bleh...
So, I don't know. This sounds like an idea that should be thrown into a black hole, or into the Void. But what do you think?
*That's a personal, inside joke of mine, obviously referencing CBS's 'Memogate' scandal. And the fact that IGN is...uh, often not 'great' at things they post. As far as I know, IGN has never actually...forged any news documents. :P

....aaaaannnnnnnd nevermind! Yates's comments have been dismissed as nonsense. The BBC isn't actually seeking a movie at this time, but if they were, they'd handle it themselves, and it would star the current TV Doctor (which is Matt Smith right now, of couse).
This does lead one to wonder why Yates even said anything of the sort to begin with. Maybe it was going to happen, but due to massive fan reaction, they decided to scrap it. Hmmmm...
Aw well. I'm happy!
