Echo Screen #7: Generational Warfare - Who won each console war and why (Part 2)
What were the best consoles of their respective generations after the leap into 3D gaming? The Commodore and Roo continue their discussion of the winners and losers of each console generation as they further develop the Roo-ian theory of console success. Remember when the word Xbox prompted laughter? Will there ever be a console more successful than the PS2? Remember the first time you heard the phrase "Wii would like to play?" These questions pondered and a whole lot more in Generational Warfare part 2 here on the Echo Screen.

I find it kind of comical that in the beggining, it was Roo's theory of game success then in this part Commodore begin calling it "our" theory.
Another thing I thought should have been brought up was the peripherals for the Wii, with all the Wiiwheels plastic rackets, bats and other things is something that is kinda of hurting the Wii. The Wiiwheel works but all these third party crap items are slowly chipping away at the Wii's innovation armor. It's not anything thats gonna kill the Wii, but I figured with the little side notes about peripherals threw out the podcasts should also be applied to the current generation.
I think the thing about this generation is that there is no clear dominator. Wii of course outsells the others and has this whole innovation with the Wii controls and waggle that the others now seem so desprate to emulate (Project natal for the Xbox and Playstation's Move). then Xbox has the Online wich cant seem to be outmatched despite the fact you have to pay for it. then there is Playstation wich seems to be entering a....well it seems to be an interesting phase with games liek Little big planet and ModNation were you are essentually the game designer and the player.
That was an interesting discussion. It educates people at my age about gaming consoles a lot. We never have something like those back in the days.

I wish you would have waited just one more year to talk about this current generation of console's. The Nintendo Wii definitely won this generation but the gap between Sony and Microsoft this gen is closing. The Wii also brought to us the Virtual Console, which I think was pretty pivotal. Bringing some of the good Retro games back to the present. I know there is XBLA and PSN but VCON when it first started had alot of promise.
I enjoy listening to the podcasts, but at times the bias is just annoying especially during this podcast discussing the PS3 VS. 360. Hating on the blu-ray functionality of the PS3 is just foolish because the games are published on BR (just like PS2 and DVD) and provide a huge ammount of space, where Xbox 360 uses a dual layer dvd. I also believe BR has been much more of a success than the now defunct HD-DVD. 360 even released an add on peripheral to appeal to the HD-DVD mass attempting to also sell the movie functionality.
The Commodore also makes a comment about how much better Xbox live is in comparison to PSN....Why is it so much better? You do nothing to justify your statements and just lead people to believe that is the best answer. I agree there are some drawbacks to PSN, but Live might be better in certain terms because you have to pay to use it allowing more support, development, etc. I own both consoles, but I just feel things are so one sided and misleading at times. I also think comparing price based on the system isn't a good formula either. I feel many different variables should have been factored to justify prices. Yes, the 360 is less expensive, but you have to pay for online so assuming you pay the monthly fee of $7.99 and this video was made in 2009 you have basically paid $200 + the cost of the console just to play online. Where the PS3 has no online fee and allows BR video if that is your thing, where the 360 requires monthly fees, plus another $150+ add on to play HD-DVD which is already a dead technology. Networking also is another area of discussion, because all PS3s are Wired/Wireless where the 360 again required the purchase of a wireless adapter for certain models. I think I can see a pattern forming here. So yes, the base prices are differen't, but maybe you guys should discuss why they are so different.
I know this is a discussion that could go on in both directions forever, but for the sake of the fans please do a little more research and don't favor one system so much. I know we all have our favorites, but I would really enjoy hearing an unbiased opinion. Keep up the good work guys!
