So, this year is Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary! More specifically, it won't be until December 18, so the day itself is a long ways off. Still though....25 years. I feel older all the time.
So, we have the whole year to share our memories! :3
Squenix released their official logo, too, and will start showing up on games this year, I think. But there's something familiar about it...It's a reference to Amano's original art work of Mog, from FFVI! Could...this be a hint of a redux coming this year, too? While it is possible, I'm not going to read too much into that. We'll just have to wait and see.
There are two things to consider though. Remember the 20th anniversary logo? At first, I thought that was supposed to be possibly Celes on it. It was designed by Amano, and well, unfortunately the way he draws women, sometimes you really can't tell....According to the FF Wikia though, it's actually Princess Sarah. Squenix did re-(re-re-re..)release the original game as an upgraded port on PSP, as well as the second, for the 20th anniversary. Secondly, Squenix has said in the past that they'll consider reduxing FFVI for the 3DS if the system does well. So...Hmmm...
So yeah! Let's celebrate the good old glory days of FF that we hold dear, this year! And I hope this is a year when Squenix pulls themselves and this series back together again. :/
Still, cheers!

I remember first getting Final Fantasy II for the SNES when it first came out. I picked it up at a Wal-mart back when they were small stores. (Shows how old I am.) Anyway I had the whole game memorized. From all the text and everything I could almost not even have to read the text boxes. That game is epic with a capital E.
To be honest, I...didn't play an FF until FFVI. I know. ;P But I loved FFVI! A lot. And still do; it's definitely my favorite. :3
I did play some of the PS version of FFIV though, but didn't play all the way through until the DS game. I just...didn't get to it. :/ But I really liked FFIV, too; I kind of wish sometimes that I did play it back in the day, but then again, it was heavily edited, so at least I didn't miss that!

I think everyone related to the old FF works for Mistwalker now. God, I hope Square-Enix doesn't do a remake of 6. They'd find some way to screw it up.

Here's a decently-written article about the greatness of FFIV!

Reviews of FFXII-2 seem fairly positive thus far. According to them, many problems of FFXII have been addressed. As for Versus - who knows when it will come out? Hopefully sometime during this 25th year!
I'm mixed emotions on a remake of FF6. I would be happy with a fairly true to original port. Remastered music would be nice too, with the option to switch back to classic of course!
Yeah, so far XIII-2 seems to be okay. A friend went through the demo and seemed to think it was okay, also noting that some things had been addressed and fixed. I still probably won't play it for a long time, if ever, but hopefully it'll give fans encouragement.
I do have to admit there are things I think could be cool to see if they ever redux FFVI. In the PSP versions of I and II, they re-created the games with gorgeous sprites; I'd especially think something like that would be cool. I'd also probably get a kick out of new FMVs, if they made any. But again, I'm not exactly 'hoping' they remake the game; I'd just wait and see how it turned out, if they do.

Are these "gorgeous sprites" going to make the game better? The thing with Final Fantasy I is that the gameplay was changed to make the game easier.

My point is, if they feel the need to remake it, that would be a good way to do it, not because it would 'make the game better.' ;P
I don't think they can 'make the game better,' overall, nor should they try, which is why I'm not specifically hoping they redux it. But if they do, this is one way I'd feel better about it.

I don't want Squeenix to touch up FFVI with their grubby mitts. =( They might fill it full of looooong, boring spanking new 3D cutscenes that will look like crap in 10 years, and OMG what if they took out turn based and threw in that ANNOYING Star Ocean style combat that they LOVE putting into shiz now? PROTECT CELES AND TERRA'S VIRTUE!!11!!

I imagine that a redux would probably still be similar to the original, gameplay-wise. If you look at all the other ports/upgrades/semi-reduxs they've made, they didn't really change the battle systems much, if at all. That would probably be safe.
For 'too many cut scenes,' well, keep in mind if this came out on the 3DS, or...even the DS still, they probably wouldn't be able to have 'too many.' I could see them having maybe a few, plus a new intro and ending, like they did for others, though. If they remade this for the PS3, that'd be a different story, but....that's probably not likely to happen. :P

I see no reason to remake FF6. The game's great. Beloved by all. If the graphics are detracting from a game like that you really shouldn't be playing it anyway. You're not a real rpg fan. You're a tourist. Go to hell. They've already ruined my favorite series catering to you clowns. They have to do it with my favorite game now, too?

I still remember the days when I actually enjoyed playing Final Fantasy games. The first one was amazing, so many vehicles to move around. The only thing I hated about the game is buying potions one at a time. Then Final Fantasy II US came out. Best JRPG story I've ever had a chance to play. Three was great too. Too bad I could never get into 7 . It never felt like Final Fantasy again until 9. I haven't played any other after that :( Except for Crystal Chronicles which I wish I had someone to play with. It's a bit boring single player.

" It never felt like Final Fantasy again until 9"-- THANK YOU.
I love FF9, I really do! I know, that seems to make me an odd one out among fans, I think. Sorry, I didn't care much for 8, and....my feelings about 7 changed over time. But I still love 9!
When GameTrailers did their Retrospective for the series a few years ago, in the section about 9, it was explained that the game was meant to be 'a fond look at the past' and meant to be nostalgic and purposely a little too formulaic a times. A lot of players, perhaps younger ones, 'didn't get it,' but other fans such as myself did, and I thought it was great. :3 I wouldn't say most of my favorite characters are from 9 though, but overall, it's a game I really appreciate. To me, the series really dipped down after that. FF10 and 10-2 were....okay, but not favorites, and well...it's just hasn't been the same to me since.
A friend and I were just talking about this, actually, and suggested what Squenix should probably do is look at other good, successful JRPGs and what they have done, and perhaps learn some lessons. Not 'copy' or 'rip-off,' but learn; ShadowHearts and Folklore were named to me as good examples, although my friend also admitted that Folklore needed more polish....

I just played Final Fantasy VI last year (I started in my youth with VIII) - its a terrific game but there is one thing about it that I dont like: enemy sprites! On the battle screen they are all bigger than your heroes! I dont know why, but it creeps me out when at one moment I see on the screen a guard being the same size as my team, and the next moment he appears on the battle screen like a giant! It took me a long time to get used to that, but I still cant say that I like it. I know Im weird that way, but thats just how I feel about it - it creeps me out!
And thats why I would welcome a Final Fantasy VI remake. It would be a tough job for them though, the 2D graphics of the game are gorgeous, if they wont put enough budget into the 3D remake, it wont look as good as the original.
Btw, all the Final Fantasy games on the european Playstation Network are 50% off right now! If I remember correctly only till the 2nd of February.

I actually like the bigger and more detailed enemy look of the classic battle system. I guess for one thing, if all the enemies were chibis like your party, that would...look kind of weird. It could work, but the way they did it allows for different possibilities. :3
I think it depends on what you mean by or how you define 'look better;' they could easily make a 3D game where more character details are visible, so you get a better idea of what everyone is supposed to look like, outside of any official art. If they made some upgraded sprites though, they could probably do some of the same things, or similar, anyway. I also think upgraded sprites would, I suppose how I'd technically define terms, 'look better' than the SNES game; again, I point to the PSP versions of FFI-II as examples. That doesn't mean the game itself would be 'superior.' no.

About Final Fantasy 9... I think most people that played the Nes and Snes versions like 9. It's the Playstation crowd that usually hate it. I'm thinking there is a rift in the way Final Fantasy is viewed. The old school and the new. Final Fantasy VII be it an old game now it's the start of the new crowd. I find that many of the old traits remain with the Crystal Chronicles games, too bad those games are not as "good".

That's probably true, often times, but I also do have friends who love the older games more, and also still hated 9. For example, characters; I think most of them agree that they don't care for most of the characters, and that's a legitimate criticism. Like I said, it doesn't have all my favorite characters of all time either, but I still like most of them, and the game in general.

So, uh, Squenix teamed with Prada and is having....characters from FFXIII-2 model this Spring's line of mens' wear.
Uh. Okay. That's...one way that Squenix is...'celebrating' the series's anniversary, huh?
Cough. What else ya got, Squenix? ;P

Not sure what to think about the clothing itself when they use CGI characters to model them.
