First Thoughts: Nintendo 3DS Hands-On

After finally getting a chance to play with the Nintendo 3DS at PAX East, we've got some thoughts.  How well does it work?  Is it just a gimmick?  Watch and see our opinion.

Very Interesting.  I recently just bought a DS XL.  I thought about holding off and getting a 3DS instead of the XL, but am glad I went with the XL instead.

Honestly though im having 2nd thoughts now...  Purely because Pilot Wings and Legend of Zelda OOT were 2 of my favorite 64 games(and Nintendo  games in general).  The main reason why I decided to go with the XL over the 3DS was because I too feel that 3D technology is gimmicky(ALL THE 3D MOVIES MAKE IT STOP) and being forced down our throats.

However this is the first actual footage I have seen of the 3DS and I must say I am actually impressed.  I can defiantly see a future in 3D gaming now and once again, Nintendo is the trailblazer.

Awesome!

Great preview, Roo!

I'm getting the system at launch, but I'm not sure which game to get...

Is Pilotwings resort really THAT good?

Cuz otherwise, I was thinking about Rayman 2.

I can't decide! And the good stuff will be coming a little bit later too. Ocarina of Time and StarFox are my main interests as far as upcoming titles goes. Oh yeah, and Mario 3DS too.

Did you try it without your glasses on? The GigaBoots crew and myself found that taking our glasses off made it look much better...with the exception of Bob. His vision is so bad that he couldn't see at all with his glasses.

Kefka: The lack of glasses

Kefka: The lack of glasses and slider take away most of the gimmickiness of the system in my eyes, that's for sure.

Yoshi: I really did enjoy Pilotwings, but I've been a fan of that series from the beginning, so it tickled my nostalgia bone to see it in 3D.  Personally speaking for myself, if I were to get a 3DS, Ocarina of Time and Pilotwings would be must buys.

Danji: I didn't try it without my glasses, and now I'm kicking myself for not thinking of trying that.  It would be interesting to see if there was any difference.  But then again, I am rather nearsighted, so I may well have suffered Bob's fate.  smiley

hmm...

I was going to wait for the inevitable 3DS lite as well, but recently when I figured out that I couldn't go back to boston for anime Boston '08 because it overlapped some importanted class time right before finals, I decided to use some of the money i had been saving for airfair, a hotel room, connention swag and such on a 3DS preorder. it seemed right to spend some of my geek fund on a game handheld. I'm curious to see how I like it.

Awesome job Roo!

I got my hands on the 3DS right before the Expo Hall closed on Sunday, and in my limited time, I had a lot of fun.

The AR games are really cool, especailly in the one I played. The game made the table in front of me turn into a game, and I really liked that, especially when a dragon burst out from a pit of lava and started to attack me.

I also got to play SF4 3D edition, which I really liked. The suprising thing to me was that the 3D doesn't pop out at you, but it gives the game more depth, and you can distinguish the foreground and background.

I am getting a 3DS at launch (Yay March Birthdays!) and am SUPER excited to own one.

Agreed +

Having just played it at Best Buy, I agree with just about every point brought up here, with one anecdote to add: I am crushingly disappointed in the aqua blue color! The promo pictures show this great, modern and chic blue that almost feels like it's a color picked out for a Japanese concept car. The actual case? Sparkly and very green. It went from a slick car in the promo shots to a Mattel toy. To be fair, it may have been the harsh lighting in Best Buy, but none the less I left with a :/ on my face.

I got to play the 3DS for the first time 2 days ago, I have to completely agree with you. Is is not worth the price tag and a year and half from now we'll have a major hardware overhaul on the 3DS that will cheaper and more powerful. I really want to re-play Ocarina of time, but I can definitely wait.

I'll have to stick with my PSP for a little longer.

P.S.

Is it me or looks like Roo gained some weight?

I am not planning to get system, but it is nice to know that the Master Quest game is going to be part of the Ocarina of Time remake.

I liked the transition affect where the camera was zoom back out to show the Commodore, I wasn't excepting a different person.

3DS!

I've got my 3DS pre-ordered and I'm picking it up at midnight on the launch day (25th March here in England). I got to play one a few weeks back, and I thought the 3D effects were really impressive. But I think the effects may vary between people. Because you see it with your own eyes, and not through enhancing glasses, some people (like myself) may find the 3D awesome but some may be a little disappointed by it.

As for the price, I think you Americans are getting it cheap at $250. In England it has pre-launch prices of like £230, which is $366 equivalent. So we're, in theory, paying a hell of a lot more then you guys are. But I feel the price is jutstified. Also, when you look at something like the Sony NGP, that'll inevitably cost more when released.

Also, on an extra note, I don't feel we'll see a new 3DS model for a fair few years yet. The reason we had so many new DS models was because they were trying to test hardware that they planned to use on the 3DS. The only reason the DS Lite was released was because it was smaller. It took over 3 years for the DSi to be released, and that actually changed hardware instead of just making the console smaller. So, if you use that knowledge, a new 3DS model will probably be released in 2014 (they won't do a smaller version becuase the console is already as small as the DSi is).

By the way Roo, great video. Pilotwings is the launch title I'm most excited for - I loved the Super NES and Nintendo 64 Pilotwings games.

I've got mine preordered; in

I've got mine preordered; in fact, I was the first person where I work to do so, back before there were different SKUs for the two colors (although *I* knew what they would be). All of the people who preordered at that point got their orders transfered to the Cosmo Black, but I could have changed it if I wanted to. Although I actually do like "Hot Wheels colors," I think I'll like the black a lot. The real thing I'm worried about is the battery life, and if it will degrade to something even shorter over time. But I'm not all that worried, because at the time when the next version comes out, I'll be making enough money to get it, no problem. I've also heard some of the AR games can have somewhat low framerates in 3D mode, so I hope that's ironed out somehow.

PilotWings Resort... ugh. Wuhu Island again, huh? Silly designs for everything? Oversimplified... everything? I'll pass. If it were more in line with the first three PilotWings games, I'd be all for it. Too bad it's not. I am looking forward to SSFIV, since it never came out on PC like SFIV did. I haven't had a handheld fighting game since... SSF2T on the GBA, and that was a broken-promises, buggy game. The only other Street Fighter game on a Nintendo handheld since then was Street Fighter Alpha 3, and I don't like a lot of the gameplay changes made to the Alpha series with 3, so it'll be nice to have this. Of course, I'l looking forward to what else is done with OoT, and I and looking forward to the 3D and better textures in StarFox 64. Kid Icarus looks like another Sin & Punishment, which is not really a bad thing. The end of the recent Golden Sun basically assures a sequel, and that's bound to be on 3DS. I'll devour another Etrian Odyssey, and one has been announced for it. I know the guys as Shin'en (Iridion 3D & II, Nanostray I & II, Jett Rocket) are excited about the system, and that makes me excited. And almost as importantly, I'll be able to play a lot of the GB/C and DSiWare games I missed (more of the former, of course). And that's just the games I know about.

There's also the nice improvements people don't really talk about enough, like the many improvements with internet compatibility and ease of use ("even" over the Wii), StreetPass' marked improvements over old Tag modes, the simultaneous support of MP3 and AAC formats, the ability to take 3D pictures and videos, etc..

So yeah, I'm getting mine. :-P I don't care if it gets smaller, this one seems small enough.

Roo: Ah, yes, the inevitable 3DS Lite. I'm still going to be a sucker and be an early adopter. Taking a step back, I think the ugly factor of the launch 3DS is no where near the DS Fat. I'll go with the 3DS and update at the 3DSi XL2...

realization

When I preordered my 3DS early this month, I traded in my DSi to help pay for it and it has really made me realize how much I value my DS and it's games more than my PSP. Although I do like my PSP I just don't love it nearly as much as my DS. Seriously, I didn't realize how much I used my DS until I had to wait for to pick up my 3DS. I'm having some serious Layton withdrawal.

price

The 3ds is listed as 349$ here no one says why. I do know we have a 10% sales tax so in logic its 318$ but still 70$ difference on the US price.

Im going to have to play the 3ds before buying it I need to make sure I can see it with my eye sight also there is next to nothing I want for it.

Nintendogs + cats and mario kart 3d are the only 2 that spring to mind. I hated the spiders in OOT enough on the N64 new and impoved spider graphics just seems a big no for me too scary. :(

Aestolia, I had to look up

Aestolia, I had to look up images of Wil Wheaton since the last time I say him was when he did a few shows of Call For Help on TechTV before G4 took over and he didn't have a facial hair.

Wil Wheaton's beard? I would say it's a good start for Roo but I prefer more of Richard Karn when he was on Home Improvement.

I feel the system is worth it without the gimmick of 3D.

3D isn't a deal breaker by any stretch of the imagination, but I won't be adopting a 3DS home from the orphanage anytime soon.

For an 1sy gen the 3DS is super but I to will mostly likely go with 2nd or 3rd gen myself.  I herd on the tech guy radio show the the 3D system the 3ds uses if ok for small sreens not big 30 inch LCD like I have.

So was the Wii's waggle and DS's touch screen at first.  Hopefully after some time, the 3D can be implemented in interesting new ways by game companies.  That's another reason why I'm waiting - the game library should get more "must have" games as time goes on.

Gimmick?

@Mario: I don't know how you, or anybody else, can call the 3DS a gimmick yet. It's only been out a few days - judge it after a couple of years when it has more titles which show off the 3D. Capcom have stated that they're trying really hard to push the 3D effects as a core aspect of game play and Nintendo will be doing the same thing too. Sure, some of the release titles don't use the 3D to further the gameplay, such as Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, but others like Pilotwings Resort use them really well. Also the AR Card games and Face Raiders use the 3D effects to good use too.
