As we've discussed a lot here already, things don't look good for Mega Man. Capcom doesn't seem to know what to do with him; maybe without Inafune, they just don't know, and can't figure out a decent direction. Well, Capcom recently reported that their 'top men' are "thinking about and actively discussing where we're going to take the brand for the next ten years and how we're going to do it."
The funny thing is, a couple of days after that statement was made, this news came out; Mega Man will be in Street Fighter X Tekken. But...not the classic, blue, semi-chibi we all love. But he is familiar though; it's...the Mega Man from the shitty, but classicly-bad, cover of the original NES game.
Seriously. The proof is here!
Now, I have a sense of humor, and I can appreciate this for all its wackiness. However, other fans probably won't be so forgiving about this. I'm not sure Capcom even thought about this, if they even care. Consider this; you could interpret this as a sign that Capcom simply doesn't feel the need to treat Mega Man or its fans respectfully or perhaps dignity anymore. When you think about everything Capcom has done, or has not done lately, it makes you wonder-
-Two Mega Man games that fans were really looking forward to were scrapped, within a pretty short time. This goes especially for Mega Man Legends 3; fans wanted and still want it. Some Capcom employees also publicly blamed fans for that game being canned.
-Mega Man was left off the Marvel VS. Capcom 3 rosters. Er..why? He was in the previous games.
So then, Capcom does this. they finally insert Mega Man into another game, and a fighting game, too, and it's obviously a joke, as if Capcom is mocking Mega Man and his fans. I'm not saying that is the case here, and I hope it isn't, but it does make you wonder, at least a little. Like I said, some fans may very well consider it this way, given Capcom's recent record.
So, I don't know; is this part of 'the future of Mega Man;' Capcom mocking and ignoring fans? What does the future for him actually hold, do you think?

I haven't played it myself, but Mega Man 10 on the Xbox arcade seems fairly true to the original formula. I can't imagine it to be too appealing to gamers of a later generation, though, and I think that's where the problem lies. I doubt Capcom would continue developing games like MM10 as it doesn't appeal to a wide enough audience (which seems the case why those 2 you mentioned were canned).
There would need to be a significant reboot to the series to draw in all audiences, but I have no idea what/how that could be approached. The thought of a first person FPS Mega Man makes me want to drown helpless critters.
As for his appearance in Street Fighter X Tekken, I definitely see the humorous side. The cover art version of the man himself seems to fit the art style better of the game - maybe that's why they went with it. As for making him fat, well, who knows. Maybe it's in reference to the lack of Mega Man releases and he let himself go during the break
You make a good point about Mega Man 10, but also 9, yet, I'm sure the point of making them into 8-bit games was to be an old-school (really old!) throwback for a certain audience. And it worked! But like you said, maybe they didn't appeal as much to those of younger generations....I'm not sure. I also doubt they'll keep making games exactly like that; we were lucky to get two, let alone one....
Mega Man Universe and 'Legends 3 were different cases though, and definitely had more broad appeal. At least, I can truly say MML3 did. I guess it's possible that Capcom thought MMU was a little too 'out there' or something. But I know fans wanted it, and I definitely know that fans wanted, and still want, MML3. I'm just still not sure why they were scrapped. :/
Capcom did sort of reinvent the series with the Battle Network series, many years ago, and generally, most of these games were thought of as okay or good. But that's another problem; just 'okay' isn't good enough for a lot of fans, and I think a lot of fans just ignore this series altogether. To be fair though, I think this series was also intended for younger audiences, and there's nothing wrong with that. Still, I understand why it can disappoint older fans.
I'm not really sure what Capcom should do either, to 'reinvent' the series again, and try to bring new life into it. Yeah, FPS....probably isn't the way to go.... ;P But there has to be something!
Oh, the fat Mega Man is obviously a joke. Clearly! But like I said, it makes you wonder if this is starting to be Capcom's attitude about Mega Man anymore; they just don't take him seriously with any true regard for how to breath new life into him, and don't take fans as seriously or as respectfully anymore. I can see how, to some fans, this would be the final nail in Mega Man's coffin, and add insult to injury. I'm not saying that is the case, and I hope it's not, but I can see how one could interpret it that way...

About Mega Man 9, the younger people/current generation of gamer is they complained that the game is difficult. I played it and I didn't have any issues with it.

Yeah, I remember some of that going on, too. All the more reason, I think it was better suited for older generations. :/
Actually, is MM10 generally seen as 'easier'? Does anyone know? How much, if so?

This is a slap in the face to older gamers. "Here you fat, middle aged piece of crap. Megaman is just like you. A fat, middle aged piece of crap. You're obsolete just like your childhood icons. We'll do whatever we want. We're Capcom. Go F yourself." Message recieved loud and clear. I will never buy another Capcom product for myself or my children.
Could you ever imagine Nintendo trolling their customers like that? We were upset Luigi wasn't in SuperSmashBros would they then make him a geriatric in the next Mario Galaxy? Give Link a walker in the next Zelda? Ignoring us is bad enough, but Capcom is out and out trolling now? I don't know how to see this any other way. Well. You know. Joke is on you, Capcom. You've lost the guy that made Resident Evil and you had to remake MvC3 in a sad attempt to get someone to buy it after you halved the roster. I see nothing it's going to bother me not to own.

Damn Capcom, I know I'm old, you didn't have to rub it in like that. Sadists. (and not in the good way.) =(
I guess this is just their way of telling older gamers that they don't want to make games for us anymore. Oh, well, plenty of other fish in the sea.

Yep, I told you some fans might feel this way! :/ And like I said, I'm....not sure Capcom entirely thought about fan reactions before they decided to do this. And as some suspect, maybe they don't care, either. Sigh...

I really don't think anyone should take this personally. As far as I can tell this was just meant to be a fun throwback to the box art, and nothing more.
As far as modernizing Megaman goes, the only logical route I can see is to do the same thing Rayman did this year. It is possible to have an engrossing side-scroller that interests moder gamers. Look at Limbo, one of the most moving and absorbing games I've ever played and it was a side-scroller with zero dialogue and no cutscenes.

Uhhmm, yea, you?
I suspect you're right in that Capcom probably didn't mean to intentionally piss off fans; however, given....how a lot of fans are, as well as Capcom's own track record with Mega Man lately, which fans are watching, Capcom still probably should have been more mindful about this.
At the same time, I do understand fan resentment, to some degree. I do hate to think that this could be a representation of a...pathetic future for the character now. :/
Interesting comparison to Rayman Origins. It is true that a platformer can still catch the interest of new generations, which Capcom may have to do. A lot of Mega Man's audience these days is probably made of more retro-gamers, hence, that's probably why 9 and 10 were 8-bit games. Maybe Capcom should pay attention to Ubisoft, and others...

I find it impossible to believe that in this day and age Capcom is so shut off from the world that they wouldn't see the complaints being leveled at their company. I don't believe in coincidence and nothing will ever make me believe this was completely unrelated to the fanbase of MvC and the backlash induced by their exclusion of Megaman from MvC3. Megaman didn't look like freaking Homer Simpson in the box art. Stupid? Yes. Fat and old? No. They were forced to remake the game when fans were angered by the lack of characters. Fans were still not happy because of the glaring omission of characters like Megaman. "We'll give them their damn Megaman. Fat internet losers." I don't think they could have said it any more clearly.
Oh and if anyone hasn't played the 2d Mario or Kirby games for Wii, those are fun as hell.

I hope that's some sort of joke. I'm hating Capcom if it's not.

Oh it's clearly a joke. I mean, come on. :P
The question is, I guess, what does the joke mean to you? Will you accept it for what it most likely is meant to be, or do you also think this is just a sign of where Capcom is going, in which Mega Man probably doesn't have a decent future for a long time, if ever, and fans are continued to be dismissed, in a lot of ways? Or, is there another way you may feel about and take the joke? It's up to you! : /
Like I said, I wonder if Capcom realizes that fans are watching them and their track record with this, and many aren't going to take this very well, whether it was meant to be an honest joke or not.
I'm not sure Capcom really deserves to be 'hated' over this. I wouldn't go that far. In a lot of ways, it may still be some kind of strike against them, if this does indeed turn out to be a 'prophecy' of Mega Man's now dark future.

I just think they should stop playing these jokes and just get on with making quality games like they used to.
