no it does not.
Now for the record I (a guy) tend to ignore the demographic for any anime for the most part and watch things based only on how good the show is and this is a good show. Take your typical magic girl for example CardCaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon take every thing you know for the most part and throw it away. This is a dark grim story with death painfull realizations every thing at least in my mind what a magic girl anime shouldnt be and it works really well.
Now on to why im excatlly flabbergasted THEY KILL ONE OF THE MAIN PEOPLE OFF IN THREE EPISODES FOR NO REASON AT ALL and thats just the begining. She just dies just like that she doesnt save anyone at all she just dies and its not even symbolic. Second thing the whole tone of the show after that is them deppresed about it oh and i forgot to mention they actually get to choose to become one its not a choosen by destiny thing they have to make contract and they go an episode untill one of them actully(The blue one) chooses to become a magic girl to use the wish that you get with it to fix a condition that a violin playing friend of hers has. And for the next two episodes till 6 at the time now it focuses on the pink one on how she so worried about her friend hunting for whites alone and whether or not she will make a contact. Then a rival magic girl not show but a red one and shes all i kill only for the benfits for me i dont care who dies because of it fighting the blue one because she has the typical ideals of a magic girl to protect everyone which the yellow had(she the one who died) and then the black one tyring to stop the pink one from making a contract so she can avoid the suffering. And finally from the 6th episode which for right now is the most recent we learn the horrible truth about making a contract with the animal thing it rips your soul out and makes it into the thing they use to transform and destroiys their orginal body as far as we know.
So im done rantting about this now i just needed to get this out there. Man this show is great breaking the mold for me any way i highly recomend this if your a fan of magic girl anime or dark grim stories for that matter.

Some of the traditional magiacl girl anime's certainly have their dark moments as well. Specifically the two you mentioned, before an americanization team got their hands on it and tore them to shreds that is. Heaven forbid we should have lesbian characters, or male characters transform into magical girls. Yeah I'm looking at you Dic.
Infact, at the end of the first series of sailor moon a number of the characters were killed (though later resurected). This is the kind of thing that got completely rewritten and hacked up, turning 2 episodes into one with a rewrite which says that they were just 'captured'.

I did before hand then my page froze and why i was retyping it the name is Mahou Shjo Madoka Magica dont quote my onthis i cant speel english right let alone Japanese. And now this whole anime is dark not just a few scenes its all 95% dark and grim for the most part leaving aside the character developement.

I understand, and will definately be looking this one up. I have a thing for dark and/or twisted anime (re: my avatar).
I just felt it needed to be said that if people do judge based on americanizations, they really shouldn't. Many series have episodes, or even complete story arks, just kind of dropped because of "irreconcilable cultural differences".

Speaking of dark anime, seen (no pun intended) Darker than Black? Oh, and Black Lagoon? Two of my favorites.

Darker than Black is on my list of things to check out.
Also the art style for Madoka is just amazing when the are hunting it switches to this weird almost twisted Alice in Wonder land kind of feeling.

I saw some of Black Lagoon at my Uni's anime club. I liked it, but never really sought it out after we moved on... Maybe I should start it again.

Same here. I find that shows that are more aimed to the male audience tend to have little to offer in re-watching or re-reading them.

That reminds me of Negima, but I would not recommend watching if you are out of town helping someone move and you became ill. Great series than... 'what?' Being sick and dreaming of it, I did not sleep while.
Edit: Should mention that Negima was not the re-vamp/re-imagined one I watched.

Oh based on the episode befor the one im describing below there is speculation that the yellow one survied because the whole your a zombie so you literaleraly wont die even if your killed sorta thing only if your soul gem thng is damage you die.
So now the blue one is depressed secretly hidding it from the pink one and is getting the facts strait with the ferret thing about him not having any values at all seeing only the practical side of the idea of ditiching your body with your soul and pretting much becoming a magical zombie girl opposed to I've lost my body i can never go back to my old life. Exlaming why are you so upset its more benifcal to your line of work hunting whitches and even the yellow one didnt find out about it and she was fine they all get so angry about this.
The ferret thing then steps on her lets call it a soul morpher which contains her soul and gives her a heavy does of pure pain to the soul. Again no human values causing pain which he equated to a spear hurled through her body to a middle school girl. Not to mention that he says hey you can even make your self feel no pain it slows you down but hey.
Serioulsy who came up with this i guess maybe some one who wanted to get a metaphorical revange on japanese female middle schoolers who abuse their ferrets.
So later the red(who just learned about the zombie soul ripping part with the rest of the main cast minus the dead yellow) one decides to explain her wish to the blue one which is to let people give her seemingly cult like father and his relgion a chance and take off. Her father find out about her wish and her becoming a magic girl and he gets drunk murders his family and commits suicide. And tells her to deal with her reget by only using her magical powers for herself and stop carring about everyone else.
The Blue one's going insane now due to regrate of her wish relaizing tha she could have had the person whom she made her wish for (a young violinist who had gotten into an accident and couldnt play) and led a happy life. But things start to wrong with the whole soul being ripped out of the body thing and not having her original body and on top of that having having a love triangle i guess (Not a funny comical one a seriouse im going to take him away from you tommarow if you dont make your move kind of one) with her second best friend non related to magic at all going after the guy that she used her wish on.
And now the black one is starting to reveal that see knew about the whole zombie soul ripping thing involved with the contact.
Now the black and red one who decided to grow feelings for others are watching the blue one fight her first witch and she's getting her but kicked. So the red one decides to step in but the blue one says that she can handle it.
And she starts to fight like a battle crazy lunatic with the creepy huge smile and eye shape to boot exlaiming your right if i do it this way i dont feel pain at all.
What a nice show that you can pull children into, isnt it with its so lovable cute promotional artwork that shows nothing of the grim details of this entire anime?
Man this is great. Hurah for dark shows invoving and foreshadowed impending the deaths of middle school girls who had their soul ripped out of their bodies not to mention that their original body is destroid and that they're practlicly zombies that can feel pain and eventually be killed not involveing decaptiation or brain destroying while they're slowly driven insane.
Oh wait the yellow one techniquly was decapitated if you count their head being ripped off by a giant cartoony worm whitch.
Pardon my bad grammar and huge lenght of the post there's just so much to rant about this awsome anime.
