Like it says, Megaupload was shut down by the Feds, and several employees arrested, after "federal indictment accuse[d] Megaupload...of over $500 million in lost media revenue from hosting pirated media," and someone charged with ""racketeering conspiracy, conspiring to commit copyright infringement, conspiring to commit money laundering and two substantive counts of criminal copyright infringement."
Naturally, one wonders if this has anything or not to do with SOPA and PIPA lately, but the Feds say no way. Of course. Do I believe them? The cynical part of me says probably not, however, if this was an actual bust operation, then chances are, there was an investigation going on for a while already, and this is just...coincidental timing. I...suppose it's possible.
Also, it is possible that there certainly were crooks working at Megaupload. People use it for perfectly legitimate things; that's why the site was created. But sure, there could have been real criminals working there. Hey, 'racketeering'?? Really? Well, it's possible, right?
Still...this is unsettling that the entire site was just shut down by the Feds.
Also, keep this in mind; if there were perfectly legitimate reasons to go after some of these people, then here's proof right here that neither SOPA nor PIPA are necessary to make these kinds of arrests. I think a lot of supporters for the bills do know this, and also don't care.

I am not surprised that this happened since sites like this charge money to download without any limitations.

That's not a sin right?
What really bothers me about this right now is the phrase 'the Feds shut down the site;' that combination of words, or a similar one, should bother everybody, any time it happens. I suppose an exception might be if an entire web site is nothing but a criminal enterprise, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Like I also said, it is possible that there were employees there who honestly were criminals; there are some serious charges that the Department of Justice has dished out to some of those arreseted, including racketeering and money laundering. If something like that was going on, then yes, those employees should be arrested, tried, and jailed.
Maybe until they get some of this straightened out and maybe some network things 'cleaned up,' it was easier to just shut the site down for now. I don't know if the site is ever coming back; probably not, esepecially if the owners were arrested, too (last I heard, that was unknown).
So...yes, I feel very conflicted about this...
