As we all know, everyone on the internet's a critic. And while YouTube users commenting "You suck" and "SHAME SHAME SHAME" is very helpful, I'd like to ask you guys for some constructive criticism on what you think we could do to make the Clan of the Gray Wolf better in general - since the fans usually have real insight that could be helpful, as opposed to the passing internet tough guy.
Essentially, in this topic, I'd like to ask: "What do we do that's not good, or even bad?"
Videos, website, podcasts... What do we do that sucks, and what do you suggest we do to fix it?

I wouldn´t ask for better content but MORE content. I don´t know if that is possible with the whole having a job and a life thing but if I had to ask for something that would be it. For the content itself nevermind the trolls! You guys are awesome just being who you are and doing what you do.
What happened to Boomers House rules? There is the one and that's it
I don't want to take away from the video game focus on most of your content, but maybe a bone tossed to the tabletop crowd too :)
more stuff in the store would be nice, but other then that nothing comes to mind, more content but again TIME is a factor

Arkus: House Rules are something we've been sitting on for awhile. We originally planned for that to be a regular series, but unfortunately of all of us, Boomer has the least time to devote to videos. However, we've been discussing some ideas for more tabletop-gaming related videos, and House Rules certianly came up.
I wouldn't be surprised to see some more of that in the near-ish future.

I wouldn't mind seeing something you guys do for fun, like a recording of a boardgame session.
Its interesting to see games I don't about in play.
I actually have a stack of house rules ready, but no time to record them. Lately, I've been using some of that material for my column instead of recording it. Which would you prefer video publishing or blog publishing of House Rules?

hrmmm, considering the question I do suppose it would be better to have the written blog. I'd hate to have to ask for transcripts of podcasts because I need it at the table.
Well, even if it's been covered in a blog post, there's nothing to say we couldn't still make a video House Rules of it. Besides, I could always add little graphics in the video in order to make examples easier to understand. That would make the videos more useful, I would think.
... Why am I making more work for myself?

Sir, I have no idea...
Because you are sick in the head.
I think that written house rules make more sense, and sometimes supporting video helps. But I don't mind writing and recording.

kinda a late post in the topic, but id like to see you guys do semi-detailed talks on your top 25 games of all time or something.
I am very satisfied with the content you guys produce. The only thing is, I wish there were more of it and more often. I know that with wine, women and song, there may not be a lot of time to do this kind of stuff, but we're all here because we like what you guys do. I'm an adult, too, and I'm seeing less and less time to do what I want, but I always seem to carve out a chunk of time.
I've never been a table-top gamer. To me, I'd like to see more 16-Bit Gems or Echo Screens. Maybe more fun, short videos like Painful Memories.
Maybe an alternative to WYSYWG.

More Echo Screens. But I know how hard those are to make. How about posting a bunch of the uncut echo screens like the Star Wars prequel one.

I saw an episode of 16-Bit Gems over on ScrewAttack earlier and was very impressed. I enjoy the fluent use of technical language and sense of humor. Also it was nice to see some focus on games that aren't in the obvious canon of retrogaming 'Literature'.
One thing I was looking for on your site that I couldn't find was an 'about us' section. What defines Clan of the Grey Wolf? I'm hoping it's substance mixed with humor.
Or maybe the YouTube equivelent of high quality British pornography.
Lord Daftwager (awesome name by the way),
Yeah, a full on "About Us" or "FAQ" section hasn't really been necessary in the past. I guess that's finally changing. I'll have to talk to the other guys and see what we can come up with. I'm sure we'd all have different ideas on what we bring to the table.
But in lieu of that right now, there's a small mission statement blurb on the right side of the main page, and I think that substance mixed with humor is a great way to describe what we do, though the specifics of that seeem to be always evolving.

I'm thinking you guys could have your own individual YouTube Channels. They don't have to have a schedule but just for vlogs and dicussions and stuff you can't put on the CotGW channel

How about "Franchise Gems"?
For instance, Super Mario Bros is a franchise and all the games are classic, but is there an underrated title amongst them?
Or, perhaps are there underrated franchises spanning multiple systems?
Maybe a title in a franchise was released on an obscure system or at the same time as a more popular title or both.
How about some video game review "ish" content? I remember you guys had done something for Star Trek Online, but it might be cool if you highlight new games that you enjoyed and maybe show some video of gameplay and such. People who visit this site are probably more likely to have similar taste in games since a lot of us are drawn to it by retro video game themed content. On top of that, I don't think it would necessarily be all that difficult to add; whenever you play a new game, just take a few notes on what you like and don't like and record some footage :P
(I'm dying for some games to play but nothing seems to appeal to me at first glance, so basically I'm recommending that you service my interests alone by reviewing video games)
You've been reading my mind, bigguy. There's a particular game I've been taking notes on just to do a blog on - but I might be leaning now toward a vlog. Sometimes those are hard to do off the cuff (I'm no Spoony One), but I guess it should matter what you guys want.
So what say you? Vlog or blog for this particular modern game review/impressions?

i think a vlog would be best, what got me to your website in the first place were the 16-bit gems on GT, if it were that sorta formula but with a modern game review, that would be great.
keep up the great work guys!
I liked the idea that one guy had of giving the table top gamers a nice section to feel welcome in.
I actually am going to start a table top game, and I intend to follow my progress (I am the GM) on video, if you'd like to pick up another program...

@Asalieri: I am interested. I have wanted to release video of our own group, but some of the players refuse to release their likeness into the public domain. As long as you and ALL of you player consent to being put on the internetz, we'll review the video and consider whether or not we want to carry it. Also, we'll probably subject it to a lot of editing. Finally, if we accept any of your work, you're on the hook for a complete story. Which is to say, if you start something, you'll have to finish it.
If you've met the above conditions and can live with them, PM me with a link to the recorded work.

Well, I've watched pretty much all your stuff now, well, all the 16-bit Gems and the PMig stuff anyway. I've commented on various videos as I went through, though pretty much all my comments were complimentary I think, as I don't see the point in putting people down publicly on YouTube - I've experienced it many times myself and although I take most of it with a pinch of salt, I can see some hurtful comments that are hard to ignore at times.
Anyway, I digress. From what I've seen, the PMigs seem to be getting significantly better and better with each episode, with the Pokémon episode being so funny that I had to facebook it immediately :P As for 16-bit gems, I really, really enjoy the informative stuff and some of the geeky jokes are great, but often the humour (and here's my only real complaint) can be downright uncomfortable to watch. I know humour is a very personal thing and I appreciate all the jokes, all I would say is try and work on your timing and presentation of the jokes.
I think pretty much all the jokes in there are great, and I especially like the subtle ones and the nods to nerdom (if you will), and I'm trying to think of how you can best tell them and keep them funny rather than uncomfortable. I think this is true of a lot of shows on YouTube and the self-depricating humour is quite awkward on most of these. Do you ever watch your shows back when you've edited them and wince a little? Perhaps it's just me, I'm not sure, but I'd suggest perhaps tonign down on the self-depricating stuff and the reaction times involved. For example, if you've said something like "that 5th grade history teacher whose cleavage I used to stare at" or something else like that, I'd suggest either leaving it as if it's a completely normal statement, or if you're going to do a cutaway with you looking guiltily at the camera, then don't do a: 1. pause whilst looking guiltily at the camera, 2. say "What?" knowingly, 3. pause and perhaps gulp. - just simply cut it down to a quick "What?" and go straight back into the review - not only will it improve the pacing of the review, but it will be more enjoyable for the audience.
All this of course is purely opinion based, and I'm sure there will be many people who like the Office-like awkwardness of it all, but I honestly think these adjustments will help to improve what is already a fantasticly detailed and well thought out review show. And I know I've gone on quite a bit in this post, quite a bit more than I intended to as well, so sorry for that, but in all honesty, it's simply because I want your show to grow and grow and I see no reason why you can't conquer the internet James Rolfe style, you have talented writers and great ideas for shows, so I'd really like to see you make it big and I'd really like to help you all out in this endeavour.
Anyway, I've waffled on long enough here - hopefully you'll read this and sorry again if you take this the wrong way. I've become incredibly analytical since graduating from my Media degree a few years ago - lol - it's ruined many a good movie going experience, let me tell you! :P
Hope to hear from you soon.

Overheat, thanks for writing such a well thought out post. I really can't argue with your criticisms here. Do I cringe looking back at my videos? Yeah, pretty much all the time. But I think that's just a natural part of evolving and learning more about any craft, so to speak.
Timing is an issue I've been working on for awhile now - trying to make things snappier and move along. I noticed somewhere around 7-8 16-Bit Gems ago that I was really leaving too much pause time in between various points or jokes that just held up the flow of the review. Hopefully that's something that's gotten better over time, at least. And the awkwardness in front of the camera is also something I've been trying to get over. Again, that's something that only seems to be helped by doing more videos and getting used to the process.
But yes, those are all points I have been aware of for awhile and am trying to fix. Trust me, I know there's always room for improvement and am always trying to make a better product for you guys. I hope that is evident as time has progressed.
Again, thanks for the criticism - it's much needed and well appreciated.
Also, welcome to the community!

That's cool Roo, thaks for being so humble, and I know it seems overly critical, and I didn't mean it to be harsh - I know you're improving, that's clear - and I just want to try and help to be part of that process. Comedy is a very, very hard thing to achieve successfully, and I'd say a good 75% of the time, your jokes are spot on. Fact is, none of this detracts from the review too much, and the majority of it enhances the review significantly. So, I'll try not to be such a downer and I'll say a BIG keep up the good work - as it really is excellent. Would I have watched all your reviews if I found them to be so bad? Of course not - in fact I look forward to each and every one of the reviews.
To everyone at the CotGW team, yourself included Roo - keep up the damn good work! Without you guys I'm bored :P

If I win the lottery (gotta play first) I'll shoot some cash your way.
More "16-bit Gems" episodes as well as "Painful Memories..." episodes would be sweet. You guys do a great job with them. The reviews are especially intelligent and usually spot on. It's great, because so many of the gems you review are ones that I've always wanted to play, but over the years never got the chance. The "Memories" videos are just fun to watch, and bring me back...
Without trying to be too "PC" (and failing horribly), why does it seem like there are so many derogatory remarks towards women in your videos Roo?

//why does it seem like there are so many derogatory remarks towards women in your videos Roo?//
My favorite was the Wii Golf joke. I tell people that one on a regular basis.

Hmmm... I never kept tabs on the number of women jokes in the videos. Maybe I should? Nah.

And if that joke came from personal experience, then I'm surprised you really didn't have a long drawn out divorce and legal battle over the cats.

Haha! This!!
I think the only reason I'm not divorced right now is that it actually made my wife laugh (yes, she was in the room when I came up with it). I count it as my wittiest moment ever, and I'll never hope to top it.
Yes, that's called low expectations.

Roo, I've always felt your wife is a good sport when it comes to the Clan. Even though she was gone until the last five minutes of the RBM, her participation showed how much she supports you.
We should all hope for a good woman like that. Cheers.

Hey Roo, I don't know how much you are in when asked about the newer games (there's a lot of retro gamers that almost don't know how to play new games, I mean, they know, but you know what I wanna say with this lol).If you guys still in, would be cool to get some comments about the result of the VGA, and the new games in the year of 2011. You know, hopes, games that you wanna know more about, games that you hate for the start, and sequels you guys wanna see anouced. (Earthbound, we already know. :D).
Also, it's on for geek stuff.
(But my request is about VGA and gaming industry)
I stumbled across CotGW's 16-bit Gems while looking for retro-game reviews on youtube. "Gems" is a superior format to many other reviews that I've seen. To get this out of the way: I really appreciate what you guys are doing here. It's refreshing to see folks delve into some harder to find (and not very well known) SNES games. As others have stated, the only real suggestion I might have is the desire for more content - time and energy constraints notwithstanding.
I'm pretty curious as to what "Clan of the Gray Wolf" means. Perhaps I'm missing some totally obvious nod to trivia in geek-land (if so, shame on me). Perhaps you could add a 'bio' section relating information on who each of you is, your interests, and what top 5 games are your favorite of all time (of any console, and any genre). Someone else posted criticism leveled at the timing and/or cheesiness of the jokes...can't really agree with that because I really enjoy that aspect of it. There is an inherent 'earnestness' in these gem reviews, if you will, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. For example if you did a 16BG on Secret of Mana, I would fully expect a light-hearted jaunt through the game's concept and creative progeniture. There are gonna be cheesy jokes and self-depricating humor sprinkled throughout, but it's done with so much love that it has become a part of the series (in my opinion). I love that the reviews are more or less equal parts trivia, history, gameplay, and jokes. A great format. The segues and asides are enjoyable, albeit perhaps a little clumsy at times. But that is part of the overall charm.
Speaking for myself, the more flashy and dazzling a production becomes (thus making it technically more complicated) the less I become attracted to it. It's like the difference between a local diner with extraordinary food and a bland chain I could find anywhere. In sum, the format and content for "Gems" is badass, and I don't want it to change. Please don't become Walmart!
(I know this was supposed to be a post about helping you guys with constructive criticism, and trust me, I fully intended to give some...unfortunately this is what was communicated to my hands from my brain)
