Oh man...I hated that particular puzzle, but I really loved Myst. I flew through most of Myst, but I got stopped cold there. I don;t exactly have a musical ear, so I struggled to get the correct notes.

Fuck Myst. I played this game on my Saturn, and I wasn't sure what to expect from it, I bought it putly based on ads I'd seen and reviews I'd read. I kinda knew it wasa puzzle game, but i had no idea what I was getting into when I bought it. I couldn't figure out at the time how to access certain points of the island, like the tower deal on the gear just off the island. After finding the second page of each book I gave up and stopped caring and wanted my money back to get something else.
If you like puzzle games, go for it. It's a highly atmospheric hypercard game. It's been so long since it came out, it has to be super cheap. Despite the difficulties with some puzzles, I did enjoy it. Don't look for a walkthrough, though, it'll ruin the game.

I don't the use of a mouse would have made this frustration any better...in fact I think i would have worn out my wrist and mouse clicking everything on my screen.
I hate games that are cryptic and vague. A game like this should give visual or audio clues as to what toi click or do. I get that it's a puzzle game and you have to figure it out and I'm cool with that, but some fucking instructions or directions would have been nice.
I picked up the gamne for about 2 dollars at this used game store, and I sfeel like I payed too much. I spent one afternoon trying to play it, After that day i put it in my closet so it doesn't contaminate my Game collection.
YOu have to like challenging adventure games in order to like this game. It's an aquired taste if you will. Trust me though, the sequels are MUCH harder. Also. I would recommend getting it on Steam if you really want to play it. It's been remade for real time and weather effects; as well as clearer cutscenes, better graphics, and you can move like in a 1st person shooter. It's $5 so I recommend it.
I have never played any Myst game before but I love adventure games so I picked up Real Myst on Steam yesterday for 5,99€ expecting a game in the style of Monkey island but 3D and a FPS view.
First the game was really confusing and I didnt know what to do so I just read all the books in the libirary and began to explore the island. I started getting frustrated after a few hours but I finally found something that could help me to get to a new island, the mechinaical island. After completing that island(I think I did atleast) I managed to solve some more puzzles on the main Myst island and prepared to do the piano puzzle.
After spending hours on this puzzle I finally got it right only to find the game engine crashing shortly after arriving to the "space" island and I had forgot to makea new save.
I think I spent a good 2 hours on that game before I did a rage quit. But yeah, those 2 hours were pretty painful...

I didn't "rage quit" I did a "WTF quit" and never picked it back up.
I never would have even gotten through the 7th Guest if I didn't tackle it with some friends. It helps to spread the frustration around.
I have this thing about puzzles where I have no idea what the goal is...

That's cause you played it on the Saturn. PC FTW! P.S. I actually like the Myst franchise. A lot actually.
I owned the Parroty Software version called Pyst.
Does that count?
I also had WinBlows 98 (which, ironically, ran on Windows 98) and Star Warped.
They were fun to mess around with but didn't have much value. They pretty much amounted to discs of DVD extras type content.

Myst is probably one of the most frustrating games out there. >:(
