First let me be clear that i4e is NOT iplaye4e. Next, I have actually tried entering one of my own 2nd level characters and used this app to play. 

The app does not require you to use the Character Builder or anything else but the books you own. So if you want a nice app to use for your characters without having to subscribe to DDi, then this will do the trick. But at $3.99, this app is pretty expensive for what it offers.

This app is an offline character sheet that is usable without any internet connection. You can keep track of multiple characters with this app, which is nice. The app has a pretty thorough treatment of powers and combat tracking. The user interface is well done, and the power card display is excellent.

The glaring flaw, is that everything must be entered by hand. By comparison, I can get the same functionality from http://iplay4e.appspot.com/ for free, with quick links to the DDi compendium, automated dice rolling, and no manual entry. Character entry took me about 30 minutes for a second level character.

I have a few other quibbles as well. You cannot take more than 30 points of damage at a time. I think a keypad entry would be better for healing and damage tracking than a slider. There’s no place to list any equipment, and there’s no place for notes.

My dream version of this app would take advantage of iplay4e’s XML export to speed up character entry and update for those of us that are subscribers to DDi and also use iplay4e. If it could do that AND provide all the same nooks and crannies that a normal character sheet provides , I would never print another character sheet. If dice rolling were added, I might leave my dice at home as well.
