I hope that I'm not the only member of the clan with a wife and kids, so this won't fall on deaf ears....

I used to read ALOT. As a kid and as unattached adult I would easily read 500 pages a week which for most paperbacks works out to be about a book a week.

But now? Forget it. I wish I could spend an entire weekend devouring a page turner. But between kids and the lovely wife...too much of my attention is demanded elsewhere.

I really love to read great stories the way some people get excited about the latest movie. So I've been trying to find a way to fit some reading into life, and that leaves me reading at bedtime after everyone else is asleep. The problem? A really good book will keep me going until the witching hour.  Once in awhile, this would be no big deal, but if I were trying to satisfy my appetite for books (which I am), I would be left chronically tired AND under-read (which I am).

Anyone else out there have this problem? I'm not a Don Quixote, but I live with the sad knowledge that I won't live long enough to read all the wonderful stories in the world.

Any sympathy for the devil on this one?

Re: Reading for the Family Man

You could try audio books. Before I had my mp3 player snagged i was going to start downloading boosk and listen to boosk while I read other books.

I doubt it would have worked out, but I figured it was an idea to cram more in.

Audio books seem to be the way to go.  I know my dad burns through a lot of books by reading at night, usually gets in about an hour or two.  I've been reading a lot at night too.  I guess its mostly about knowing when to put it down.

Re: Reading for the Family Man

I don't have a family or anything of the sort, but I have a similar problem. (I'm far too busy having to read material for my degree to have any time to read for leisure!)

I dedicate the time it takes to drive to and from my university (30 minutes) to listening to an audiobook. It becomes something I look forward to whenever I commute and a welcome reprieve from the shit I do when I leave to go home at 10 PM. :)

Re: Reading for the Family Man

I really should get audio books.  I don't usually have a lot of time to read (outside of the bathroom), but I do have a 45 minute commute to work each way during the work week.  And there's only so much local talk radio I can stand.

"outside of the bathroom"...That's not reading, Roo.
