The Way Games Work: Nintendo 3DS

In a new series, Roo explains in depth the technology behind the highly anticipated Nintendo 3DS - and also uncovers how other 3D methodologies work along the way.  All while slipping in a picture of Christina Hendricks and a potshot at Avatar.  What more could you want?

Programming Note: "The Way Games Work" is a new series by the Clan of the Gray Wolf that explores the science behind various gaming technologies and makes it accessible to the layman... like if Bill Nye was on G4 (and if G4 didn't suck).

And if you missed it previously, this video was a sort of prototype episode which influenced the style of the show: Earth Bound (NES) Prototype Hands-On

Re: The Way Games Work: Nintendo 3DS

I found this to be very inforamtive...even though you kinda lost me when you got into some of the deeper sciences.

To be honest though, I really dont think 3d is the next big thing in gamimng, or Telivision.  I think everyone is just trying to cash in on the Movie indistires attemtp to ring in more customers.

Remember the Movie Beowolf that came out a few years ago in 3D. (Yeah, the CG one)  I finally got to wacth that one like a year or two after.  Now I loved the Epic Poem.  It's actually one of my favortite works of litirature.  but when I saw this movie...I literally fell a sleep.  It was not very interesting and there wasn't anything special about it.

Many of the people I talked to said that it wasn't anything special and that the Technology used was already there and thus, not ground breaking (By that I mean the CG, not the 3D.  If looking for proof, I beleive Monster House is a good start.).  They even said the 3D wasn't worth it since the movie was jsut boring.  Glad I didn't spend the 8 bucks to watch it in 3D nor the 6 bucks to wach it in a social environment (To lazy to say theater).

Now Avatar was a very good movie and I did see it in 3D.  But...the 3D didn't Impress me atall.  It didn't impress me with Christmas Carol either.  My Mom likes the 3D but I just don't....well I see a difference obviously, but...I can't really say either of us would miss 3D if it jsut up and left the Theaters.

Now, one thing I will say, I eas watching Sessler soapbox on G4tv.com and there was a debate he had about 3D gamimg.  If memory serves, he was actually against it, saying that it wouldn't help to imrpove the gameing indestry (Well not much anyway.)  I thought about it for a second and I agree.  I beleive he stated that it wouldn't make the gaming experience any different.  in fact, I think he said it might even hamper your gamming experience as the 3D effects could mess with your perception of the game world (I could have also fabricated that aprt in my mind...I tend to do that alot.  I should probably get that checked.

Now don't get me wrong, I want a 3DS but not becasue of the 3D.  I want it because of Games.  3D is actually the last of my concerns.  I'm not  against the 3D, but it's nothing special.  Im glad they give you the options but it's just not a sell for me.

From what I am understanding, with this method, any game/picture/movie that was originally non 3d couldi n deed becoem a 3D media this way.  If this is true then I could see it being pretty neat.  I mean imagine watching the original Transformers animated movie and seeing Unicron, Optimus Prime, and Megatron/Galvatron all in 3D.  tell me that wouldn't rock your world at least for the moment.  (I don't know if you could tell but I am a HUGE transformers Fanboy.)

That's pretty cool, I'm just not excited about 3-D.

It does bring back some childhood memories though.

I remember going to 7-11 to get a free set of glasses to watch 3-D movies on TV.

I think it was Creature From the Black Lagoon.

The 3-D broadcast was really hyped by the network as a cool thing.

I was 5 or 6 and remember being seriously underwhelmed.

Re: The Way Games Work: Nintendo 3DS

So . . . I actually watched a 3-D movie (billed as 4-D) that actually did well with the effect.

The glasses were clear, not the typical old red and blue lenses.

Granted, it was a Lego movie shown at the Legoland Discovery Center in Schaumburg, IL, but it was really well put together.

Clutch Powers is the title character's name if that gives you a clue as to how campy this movie is.

It was fun to watch with the kids, though.
