Weekly Wringer 3: Christmas Specials

Back at home base and still learning to use video editing software, the Commodore is back this week with the first Weekly Wringer of 2011! This week, the Christmas Wringer is wraped up 80's style which is Lawrence Fishburn approved! Then the Commodore has a fresh question just in time for the new year.

As promised in the video, here's the link to the greatest Christmas special ever!!!

Pee Wee is like a clown to me. When I was little, I had nightmares about Pee Wee's Playhouse. So my parents wouldn't let me watch it. Still to this day, Paul Reubens freaks me out.

As for the Fish and Cowboy Curtis, did you know that the role of Morpheus was originally offered to Sean Connery? He turned it down because the plot was "silly." That's why he took the role in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, because he assumed it would have been as good as the first Matrix movie.

Ok, as for this week's Wringer, there's really not a lot I'm excited about, save a few exceptions. I've been kind of "meh" to a lot of the games the last few years, so in no particular order:

Batman: Arkham City

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Metal Gear Solid: Rising

The Third Birthday: Parasite Eve 3

Also, if I can ever force myself to sit down at my PC long enough to replay through the first two, I'm going to go with Diablo 3.

Oh, Final Fantasy Versus 13 is scheduled for a quarter four release date by Square Enix, but murmurings from within the company are that it will be pushed back to 2012.

And although, technically, Fable 3 is already out, it won't be released on PC until this year. I don't own a 360, so I've had to wait all this time.

Mt response

I would say that my most anticipated video game /gadget/ etc.. would be the Nintendo 3DS but with so little information on the system it self and the games that are going to be on it besides the Japanese release date and price an dminor details from developers here or there.
So my response would have to be the Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection is my most anticipated game of next year pending a US release date. Because in my Opinion Final Fantasy IV is the best in the series and I would love to see another update over here in the states with the improved graphics and an easier way to play the After Years.

Mostly the 3DS is what I'm looking for. It has such promise but at the same time might end up like the virtual boy. I REALLY hope not. The game I'm looking forward mostly too is OOT 3DS. But Portal 2 is also on my list for 2nd. Now all valve needs to do is announce HL 2 EP3.

In terms of games, my number

In terms of games, my number one choice has gotta be

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

I didn't even know they were going to make a sequal, after MvC2 came out and i played it on my PS2, unlocked everything, i was a little sad because i thought it was the end. Marvel vs. Capcom 1 was a staple of my childhood in terms of gaming, I would go down to my local Minyards grocery store and play it, my brother would always kick my ass with Ryu and Wolverine PLUS he played on Manual which made it harder to do Super Moves, MvC is still one of the best Arcade games out there, I don't really like fighting games all that much but this defies that. So when i heard Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was coming out you can imagine how happy i was to hear that one of my favorite games got another title added to it, i can't wait till February 18th when it comes out.

In terms of Hardware

The 3DS

Like most people when i heard this (My first time was when E3 was on) i thought of the glasses i had to wear and with the DSI and DSI XL i wasn't to excited for it when i herd the news, BUT when they explained that there was no need for glasses AND you could control the 3D effect my faith in Nintendo was retuned, when i saw the titles that were being released for it i almost jumped out my window (3 Story Apartment) because i saw The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! The game that made me a gamer AND a Zelda Fan, so you bet that's the first game i'm gonna get when the 3DS comes out!

As for 2011, here are my

As for 2011, here are my excitements:

The 3DS:
With some of the games announced, I can just wet myself at the amazing-ness. Not only can you play classic games on it, but some of our favorite childhood games are being remade, or continued. Paper Mario is my favorite video game series ever, and with the fourth coming for the 3DS, I'M SO FRIGGIN EXCITED. By what I've seen, I'm about 70% sure it's an RPG, and THANK GOD!. Though the third game was clever, the RPG aspect was gone, and that pissed me off.

Skyward Sword:
Seems cool with the motion censor, but then again, Nintendo needs a bit of an improvement with motion controls, I don't think the censor bar is going to be enough for the game.

More videos from my favorite people:
I'm excited for all the awesomeness that's to come with my favorite websites. With this series started, I'm going to get even more COTGW in my life, which makes me even happier. With BrentalFloss becoming a YT partner, (and having more shows) I'm excited to see more of him. With Team Mountain Gaming and their Marathons and Videos. I love watching marathons, and those guys are so awesome

And lastly,

Myself:
I know it sounds a bit shallow, but with many of my limitations regarding my videos being lifted, I'm so excited that making my videos is going to get a lot easier, and a lot more fun.

It's actually just kind of a

It's actually just kind of a rumor that the 3DS hasn't had much revealed about it. The release dates and Japanese price have been announced. Heck, even the system's specs have been leaked! I also know the WiFi will use a single friend code, instead of 1 friend code for each game AND the system. The permanent/simultaneous tag mode is an awesome improvement (one that I was personally hoping for, but not expecting... and something I think that can REALLY flower with the improvements). 3D pictures. Built-in accelerometers and gyroscopes. Augmented reality features (that tie in some other features, like the previous two). Widescreen top screen for better screen efficiency. Great-looking 3D slider (still would have preferred an in-set analogue stick, but this is the next-best). Analogue 3D depth adjuster. Better graphics and storage capacity (8x for the starting carts, I think - still should be more, IMO). And most importantly, tons of great games announced for it.

Yeah... so... >.> I'm looking forward to that. I got a GBA and DS on launch and they didn't disappoint one bit.

As for games...

Mass Effect 3. Bar none. Absolutely no contest here. I just hope they make the choices matter a bit more than they did in part two; there was almost no story divergence. But since they don't need to leave room for another sequel, they can end it in a multitude of different ways. I just hope I can kill a lot of Reapers in a triggered supernova, as it's the only thing I've thought of that could reasonable be expected to take out a lot of them. LOL

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I say this tentatively. I've never played a Zelda game I didn't like, and I've played them all, save for the Game Watch (no, not the Game & Watch, I HAVE played that) and the CDi ones which I never want to play. So I know intellectually I should really love this game. However, I also know they've been getting easier at the same time I've been getting better at them. So, I've perceived them getting almost insultingly easy. I really hope they address this somehow in Skyward Sword. I'm also looking forward to hopefully nearly fully-realized sword/etc. duels for the first time in video game history. That's what I bought my Wii at launch for, after all...

Etrian Odyssey 3DS/4. If it comes out this year, that is. I suspect it will in Japan, but we'll have to wait until 2012. Etrian Odyssey is not for everyone, so I absolutely don't suggest everyone goes out and buys it. But it's for me (and another friend I've convinced to play it, who now loves it). This RPG 3D dungeon crawler (think Wizardry) is really hardcore, and even normal enemies in this game can put your whole party down. It requires a lot of forethought and patience, but at the same time allows for many different party builds and strategies. Grinding won't get you very far, but strategy will. Really, they're all remarkably well-balanced games. A great marriage of Japanese and Western RPG philosophies, too. It's also a series that can totally relax you with the exploration, then totally put you on a knife's edge during a tough battle. And the music is fantastic in every single one, thanks to Yuzo Koshiro (the same guy/prodigy who did Streets of Rage, ActRaiser, etc.).

Did you hear that, Roo? :-P Yuzo Koshiro.

I don't really wait for stuff to come out but for 2011 there is only one; Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation.

As for the 3DS it feels that the DSi and DSi XL were just released and another version of the DS should not be coming out yet.

Diablo 3 for sure.  Diablo

Diablo 3 for sure.  Diablo made me a gamer and i hope they will get it right.  Cause from what i`ve seen its going to be a lot more cheesier and eventually will fail. I still can`t believe they let the whole community down with their totally absurd character design and the decision to revive just some classes and not the whole cast + new classes. Am i the only one who really read the storybooks found in the dungeons, cared for the history of Tristram and had absolutely gorgeous times with the 5+ books made out of this franchise? In fact classes like Necromancers and Amazonas (yes  i look at you,"hunt or beíng hunt" hunter-with-grenades-and-friggin-selfreloading-armbows :  fuck this hollywood shit!!!!) have a deep history and influence to the world and now some retarded wanna be monsterslayers (i look at u, stupid monk, i loved the calm one in Hellfire Expansion with his stick and slow kick , not that son-goku substitute) want to have a piece of the epicness cake diablo is.  Arena is so stolen from WoW and kinda stinks,  world pvp made diablo survive. I rather see some really engaging territory-guild-war experience in big scales, but i understand the companys trying to play a safe game with only expanding the existing mechanics. Money, darn you!

3DS is a big thing, really seeing forward to cry when i lay the 250 bucks down for it, most expensive handheld of all time isnt it? Awesome as it is.

Berserk max 17, this year, plsssssss

I'm really looking forward to the 3DS being launched, though I likely won't get one for a few years.  The concept is pretty brilliant, and I'm looking forward to seeing how well Nintendo can run with it.  If 3D is to catch on in any way outside of movie theaters, this is it.

DS came out right after the GBA Micro. The DSi and XL are not new systems, just new versions. They certainly were not necessary buys. I still have my original DS.

They've always created new classes instead of returning old classes, though. I would have liked ALL the classes too, but this certainly is tradition.

It's the boring answer for me: Skyward Sword!

I just can't get into about 90% of what everyone else has mentioned.

Anyway, the 3-DS just doesn't excite me. I like the idea of retooling games for a new system, but 3-D has been a short-lived gimmick in the past and will be again in the future.

That and I am not looking forward to the additional eye strain.

I trust that the 3-D games can be played in 2-D (hopefully on a non-3-D DS.

3-D will excite me when we can start playing games in our own holodecks.

The pack leaders know how I feel about 3D. Therefore I will not be buying a 3DS. Heck, I didn't even buy the original Game Boy. I waited until the Super Game Boy was released and then started buying games. Then I bought the GBA player for the Gamecube.

Kinda, Diablo 1 introduced no real Ethnic Background to their unspecific Classes,  Barb Rouge Mage might just be Pala Amazona and Mage from Diablo 2, so basicly all classes returned.(sry Monk ^^)  But the classes of Diablo 2 were so original and brilliantly crafted they should not have mixed classes . The Doctor is fail in every aspect of its design compared to the original necro (maybe im so pissed cause its my favourite char and i adore the books.) The new Long-Range class, what is it called, Demon Hunter? does not  appeal to me too.  I need interesting folks with believes and cultural meaning (yeah a little subtle in a Hack`n`slash :D ) and Demon Hunters simply reminds me of sum action fashion i never really liked. Also i dont care if i can take enemys down with enviromental damage through damaging a bookshelf, and it would be a lot wiser to focus generating a new and better D1 than a D2.  Cause what Diablo 2 , 3+  will ever punish is its incompetence to create THE mmo experience, a harsh pvp world just like Fonline.  A D1 was way more acceptable and comfortable alone, creepy as it was. I dont remember me playing D2 singleplayer.  Im sure D3 will be great game and all, for gods sake they even could implement those missing classes with dlc. Hopefully it plays better than looks by now.

@Knightcrawler: I was referring to the DS that I already own as the non-3-DS that I would like to play those games on.

Much like the DS Lite is not compatible with original Game Boy games but is compatible with Game Boy Advance games.

Will the 3-DS games be compatible with current DS systems? That is what I wanted to know.

Wringer 3 Response

Lots of good picks in the comments here! Hmm, I'm not looking too far into the future with my pick for a release title in 2011. Going with Dead Space 2. The first one was such an awesome experience, creepy as anything, solid gameplay and atmospheric and immersive. Played it with a bunch of my friends and I know we'll do the same for this release. As having a whole bunch of friends working on it at the same time makes such a difference for the gaming experience and you add in that comrodory element to the equation.

Otherwise I've been on a Retro game kick and have been bolstering my SNES and Genesis collection in recent months (16 Bit Gems anyone? haha). Great stuff Commodore, really enjoying this series of updates and videos!

No, you can't play 3DS games

No, you can't play 3DS games on a DS. It's not a new version of DS, it's an entirely new system. It's the same reason why you can't play GBA games on a GB... or DS games on a GB. You can't play N64 games on an NES, or PS3 games on a PS1. :-P Same difference.

The example you mentioned was backwards compatibility, but what you are asking for is forward-compatibility, and that sadly is impossible. :(

Just to add: backwards

Just to add: backwards compatability is one of the reasons I usually skip several generations of Nintendo handhelds.  It still pains me that I'll eventually have to give up the opportunity to play GBA games on the same handheld as 3DS games, but I guess that's the price of progress...

Hell, I even keep my GBA fairly handy in case I ever want to pop in an old Game Boy game.

That isn't entirely true about a new system's games not being backwards compatible.

The first generation of GameBoy Color games were compatible with the original GameBoy.

And if the 3D effect can be turned off . . . .

meh
