Weekly Wringer 4: 2011's Most Anticipated Game

The Wringer goes back to normal today after a few weeks of "themed" holiday questions. No more! The Commodore looks forward to his most anticipated game of 2011 and reaches into the grab bag to pose a new, and far more shallow, question. And just as a suggestion, you may want to dig out your childhood action figures to kick up the nostalgia to prepare for this week!

I was the dissenting opinion

I was the dissenting opinion on the 3DS. I don't want it-- ever. I think 3D is a gimmick and will be relegated as a gimmick for the third time in the tech's history.

I also forgot to mention that the one tech I want in 2011 is the effing Sony Google TV! I can't believe I forgot to include that. Hell yes.

As for when the versus came up and I saw Power Rangers on the screen, I was thinking, "Psh, no contest, no matter who the rival is." Then you had to go and make the challenger Ninja Turtles.

But the biggest question is, are you referring to Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and the late 80s, early 90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? I'll assume you are.

Based simply on the massive level of fail the TMNT crossover episode of Power Rangers Turbo was, I'm going to go with MMPR and include Zeo in that mix. The others are absolute fail-- even Dino Thunder, where Tommy was essentially their "Zordon."

Now, to swing it back in the other direction, I did have action figures from TMNT. But by the time I got into MMPR, I'd essentially gotten out of playing with "toys," so I declare this question null and void. The level of win makes the world a-splode. Or cancel out each others' energies. Or make Keyboard Cat play us all off for even discussing it.

Hmmm. From My point of view, I'm going to have to say TMNT. First let me say that I'm thirteen, so I won't have much input on old cartoons and TV shows and such. But, what I can say is that I've heard more of TMNT nowadays then I do PR. I usually only hear about Powerangers when somebody makes fun of them. TMNT has made more impact for me because I still hear about the great games that were released. In fact, I'm currently watching an LP of TMNT IV Turtles in Time. I've never played it, but GOD it looks fun. So....

TMNT

NO CONTEST

without a doubt tmnt. Power rangers was predictable, unintresting and got old

after two seasons. TMNT defined the early 90s, and its still continued today today.

Response

Well it depends on how you look at it. What you're comparing them on can change the way it turns out. If you compare them on originally they tie because of both taking from Japanese media with the concept of ninjas and the super sentai series respectably. If you compare them on the grounds of pure length (excluding comics)then power rangers win. If you compare them on grounds of just pure nostalgia then it depends on the person who wins based on the attachment they have to either of the series. You could also compare them on who's more power full then power rangers win based on their amount of fire power used when taking down 50 story enemies while the TMNT mostly only deal with mutates and mostly normal human gangs with plain weapons and the occasional interdenominational blob. So if you look at it neither of them can win because of all the different things you have to consider when looking at the series so my response is that the is no ANSWER.

my answer

I am actually going to go with Power Rangers. In my early childhood I was a huge, Huge, HUGE (mimicking Roo from 16 Bit Gems #3 Star Trek Star Fleet Academy Starship Bridge Simulator) TMNT fan. I had many action figures of them along with the turtle truck and jet. I will never forget this and to this day I still want one. One year when Santa was coming down the chimny he popped my Turtle Blimp. My parents went to KB Toys to return it and they were all out. So for almost 20 years now I have not gotten my Turtle Blimp... I will get one one day and display it in my house. However, once Power Rangers came out my friends and I were instantly hooked. We would pretend we were power rangers every day for recess and at each others houses. Heck for Halloween we were all different power rangers (I was billy cuz I liked that he was a nerd). Years later one of my childhood dreams was answered. At my martial arts school where I taught, my instructor knew a person who was great friends with Jason David Frank (Tommy). He actually came down to Louisiana to teach a few classes. I got to hang out with him, go out for a drink, and do a fight scene with him. Cool guy... does cage fighting now. (I got his autograph... go me).

It was a close battle but I would have to say Power Rangers. PR stayed around longer (yes I know TMNT came back for a while but they dissapeared for around 10 years or so), even if we could argue about the quality of the later PR series. I loved them all up until Lost Galaxy. Once they got rid of Zordon I hated it. Power Rangers in Space was actually pretty good, but nothing beats Mighty Morphin.

Mr. K, I guess a console

Mr. K, I guess a console gamer would be confused by visual options. :-P

As for who would win... grahhh... that is a tough one. TMNT never kill any of their opponents, so at first glance one might assume it's impossible for them to win. But at the same time, Power Rangers probably would restrain themselves in a show match, too. Another thing is that while the Power Rangers have huge Megazords, I don't think they ever use them against equally-matched ground fithers. If they did, the Turtles would just run away and device a strategy with Splinter. The Power Rangers do outnumber the Turtles 5-6 to 4... however, the Turtles could bring in Casey Jones. So that more or less evens it out.

Now, a big edge the Turtles have is with their melee weapons proficiency. The Power Rangers seem pretty useless with most of their knives and stuff most of the time. They can use a lot of them as projectile weapons, but that has never been very effective against the Turtles in the past. Empty-handed, they are probably equally matched. I'm... gonna have to go with the Turtles. They're a lot more agile. They jump higher, run faster, and are more effective with weapons. Also, pizza can revive a Turtle like a fairy *ahem* can revive Link.

But after the fight, they'll all go out for pizzas and shakes at a local beach-side youth center. BTW I am thinking about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the 80's-90's Turtles. I'm not even sure if the Green Ranger would be on the other Rangers' sides, because Tommy was cooler when he was brainwashed. I really only watched the first two seasons, I think. I stopped after the season Tommy became the White Ranger. Oh speaking of Tommy, my Uncle used to employ him for construction I think, so I have his autograph somewhere.

Oh, and where do EITHER groups get their money for their food?! O.o

KC, I didn't even buy the original Game Boy. No Pocket, Color, Advance-- nothing. I don't like hand held gaming. It makes me nauseous. About as much as going to see a movie in 3D.

When the Super Game Boy was released, I bought it immediately, along with Link's Awakening and Kirby. I accumulated more games after that, but I eventually had to get a GBP just to link Pokemon Blue to my buddy's Pokemon Red to complete my Pokedex. But other than that, I didn't use it at all. I returned it after I got what I needed from him.

Then I got the GBA player for my GameCube. I still use it and love it.

Power Ranges was EPIC FAIL from day one.

Pathetic acting, worse writing, moronic posing, horrendous Zord fight scenes, crummy sets, lame cinematography.

Uggghhh.

TMNT is EPIC WIN in any medium.

Comics.

From Eastman's and Laird's original violent series to TMNT Adventures published by Archie Comics.  Yes,THAT Archie.

The Power Rangers don't stand a chance in this category.  Not even the Mighty Marvel could save them.

WIN http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tmnt1cover.jpg

WIN http://www.foocomics.com/auctions/uplimg/img_100021_9fb8662136c692fbe83142324c5996d6.jpg

FAIL http://d1466nnw0ex81e.cloudfront.net/iss/600w/109/141091/4700301_1.jpg

Video Games.

No contest. the Turtles have been in more hit games than the Rangers have had decent episodes of their show (which isn't hard considering my above statement).

Movies.

While the cinematography, soundtrack and special effects of the first MMPR movie was loads better than the series, it was still forgettable.  (I only saw the first one because my best friend didn't want to go by himself)

I declined to watch the second one, EVER.

The story of the first TMNT movie was EPIC!  I could watch it again and again (even though Arkus ran it into the ground when we were kids).  The second movie was fun, and the third, though bad, is more watchable than any MMPR anything.

Television.

The Turtles cartoon wins against the MMPR series (any incarnation) hands down.  Better comedic timing, more exciting action sequences, better story, villains that weren't absurdly lame, interesting minor players (Usagi Yojimbo, anyone?), believable emotions instead of over-acting.  Just better all-around.

TMNT FTW!

I'd have to agree with Tommy on most points here.

Also, why, when the power rangers have multiple zords, do they only ever seem to rely on the megazord?

Although, as far as I can remember, the Power Rangers movies were all very generic and boring,
but they never really got mind numbingly bad. Unlike TMNT 3 *Shudders*

I understand that, K, but you complain about it being 3D, then switch topics to the fact that it's a handheld. The two are totally unrelated. If you don't like handhelds, that's fine, but I don't see why you'd say it's about the 3D.

Come on, though, guys. Neither of them have great writing. :-P I'll try the TMNT comics eventually, though.

TMNT Original Series

The original TMNT series wins it for me hands down. Though I did watch MMPR also...kinda faded off on it once the fisrt movie came out (Zed was Ivan's bitch). TMNT However, I still watch to this day with my 3 year old son who has now officially passed me up in episodes watched...he's seen ALL 8 seasons and wants more LOL. Also, the new TMNT incarnations since then aint half bad, j/ missin that late 80's early 90' cheese is all( I made a funny). So yeah TMNT FTW!!!

Hello?  Turtles took down the

Hello?  Turtles took down the Technodrome, a heavily armed, mobile fortress, loaded with Foot Soldiers and Mouser robots. If the Turtles know anything, it's overcoming impossible odds.  And doing it with traditional Ninja weapons, no less. The Rangers never won a battle I saw without becoming the MegaZord (granted, I didn't go out of my way to watch the show, but I saw enough watching TV with Arkus back in the day). Let's talk abou villains for a moment.  Rita and her lame-ass minions would be no match for Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady, and Baxter Stockman. If nothing else, the Turtles villains are more interesting than anything that has come from the Rangers universe. Oh yeah, what about those action figures the Commodore mentioned? Besides the fact that the Turtles came with  more and better accessories, a simple test can prove superiority.  Drop a Turtle and a Ranger off the roof of your house, and you can go play with theTurtle, but you will be buying a new Ranger figure.

The more I think about it,

The more I think about it, the more I truly have to side with the Power Rangers. One of the things that the first three seasons, at least, proved is that you don't need a large budget or animation to keep children satisfied. Hell, even in the first season of Power Rangers, when they were still using the stop motion from the Japanese variant, it was still equally satisfying. It looked like crap, but that didn't detract at all from how awesome the show truly was.

I have a lot of personal reasons for Power Rangers, as well. My cousin Raymond passed away three years ago in a motorcycle accident. For about a year when we were young, he and I lived together while his dad (my uncle) was in Kuwait. We went to the same elementary school during that time. There was a trail through the city zoo that ran from our neighborhood to the school. We had to book it home after 3 p.m. to get home and watch Power Rangers in time-- and we had to pray we got past the railroad tracks before the 3:10 train.

Sometimes we'd stop at the butcher in the neighborhood and buy those tiny, chocolate-covered donuts if we had enough time and hadn't used our snack money that day. I think because of that memory, Power Rangers gets the little extra "oomph" that pushes it over Ninja Turtles.

As for the Ninja Turtles, I hate the movies. I hate them all. Now, the cartoon, on the other hand, was win. It probably doesn't stand the test of time, though. I single-handedly kept my local putt putt place financially afloat in the 90s playing the arcade version of TMNT. I had the action figures and they were epic. But it still just isn't as good as Power Rangers.

I remember watching Teenage

I remember watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Saturdays at 10am and must watch them even when out of town. (Remember parents saying check-out time is 11am and it is past 11am, but Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are on.) I have (pardon me while I get them). Okay back I have some Turtle toys not much though and a Halloween costume. The movies I have fond memory except the third movie very boring. The only good video game is the first NES game.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers I watched up to 'In Space' everyday but when they separated Bulk and Skull that was it for me couldn't watch them anymore, even though the Alien Ranger and Justin were pushing my tolerance to the point that I almost stopped watching Power Rangers.  Have never had toys from them (but wanted them), the only toy I have I picked up later in life. The movies not bad but decent. Video Games short very short gameplay.

As for a comment above Power Rangers are predictable but what show/movie isn't?

I would say Power Rangers, for the fact that I want to re-watch them and if they release the original Power Rangers in a DVD box set I would get them and if I find toys I want to get them. But for the Turtles I do not have the feeling to re-watch them, TV shows nor the movies or even buy toys of them even with the toys laying in front of me.

TMNT vs. MMPR

In a fight, the power rangers would totally win because of their advanced technology (giant robots ftw)

  But let it be known:

THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTALS ARE COOLER ON EVERY LEVEL AND ARE

                                                     BETTER IN EVERY WAY!!!

TMNT by a longshot.  I'm

TMNT by a longshot.  I'm going to have to agree with TommyJames and say that bad acting, bad cinimetography and bad sets really made MMPR the pathetic production that it was.  Not only that, but the couple of MMPR video games I remember playing back in the day were hilariously bad.  The TMNT animated series (well, at least the first run) was MUCH more interesting and had a MUCH better storyline and writing.  Plus, kick-ass action figures and playsets (although by the time the PR became popular I had long outgrown such... endevors), and MUCH better video games made TMNT a no-brainer between the two.  Sure, you had those two movie sequels, the live action series, and the crappy second animated series, but even those were arguably better than even the highest points in the MMPR franchise.

Basically, I can sum this argument up in three words: Turtles in Time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is probably a major reason a lot of people could name four Renaissance artists at all so I think for that reason alone it should get the nod, haha. It was a much bigger part of my youth than Power Rangers were, but that is by no means to say any disrespect to the Mighty Morphin crew. That show had a huge following and I remember my neighbors being obssessed with it and having all the toys. My vote stands though, TMNT!

Playing a video game and it

Playing a video game and it wasn't neither of the above when comments of this Wringer popped into my head.

(1) (Production value is a reason that Power Ranger suck.)  So Star Trek Voyager would be better than the original Star Trek?

(2) (Power Rangers costumes sucks.) Superman and early Batman they wore spandex/tights with their underwear on the outside.

Admittedly, there is more to

Admittedly, there is more to a show than it's production quality.  Voyager would be a good example of that.  As far as Trek series are concerned, which one is best is debateable.  I haven't watched a series that I didn't like, but my favorites (besides the Original) are Next Generation and Enterprise.

However, all I ever saw in a MMPR episode was a flimsy story, whose only purpose was to fill up time until the (nearly identical in every episode) fight scene.  Where was the writing talent?

My problem with their production is that it didn't even seem like they were trying.  With all the money they were making off of that property, they didn't try to get better actors, upgrade the special effects, or build more realistic sets.  It was a bad commercial for lame toys.

Plain and simple, every episode looked exactly the same.
