Weekly Wringer 41: Death of the Desktop

Fall is upon us and the Commodore is doing a little Fall cleaning. But in the midst of surface cleaning and reorganizing, he takes some time to talk about the death of the desktop interface, something I'm sure all of you do when you're cleaning up. After considering the contributions of the community and giving his own opinion, the Commodore asks a question very much unlike any he's asked befoe which will be sure to have you pondering the philosophical underpinnings of your lives... or not. It's the Weekly Wringer! (Oh and be sure to watch it before Thursday!)

Bill Shatner all the way

I think Bill Shatner would be the best babysitter by far. He has an extraordinarily funny personality, and I have a feeling he would make my methaphorical children laugh like hell. He is the type of guy who doesn't even have to try to be funny, his voice, and general composure make him wildly entertaining. I think Mark Hamill is a better actor, but babysitting is not an acting competition. Plus, if Bill messed up I could live with it. He could be home drunk passed out on my couch, with my ghost baby crying, and I couldn't yell at him. Could you yell at Bill?

Death of the Desktop

I don't think we ever saw any real multi-tasking in action in LCARS, as far as I remember LCARS was in all practicality, just a design language; so it can't really be compared. On that, I think multi-tasking is where a departure from the desktop may stumble, or fail. Regardless, I think you're spot on with that the Desktop will never die for 'power users.'

I'm going to have to Disagree with you on the desktop dying.

In the first 9 months of sales of windows 7 alone 175 million copies were sold and as of July of this year 400,000,000 copies have been sold. So I really do not think the desktop is going anywhere any time soon. The problem with the preceived idea that the desktop is dying is that it is in no way interesting at all anymore. It has hit its  peak and nothing new really can be done to change that as it has been around so long. The reason smart phone have taken off so well is because phone were stupid and broken and nothing but calls could be done with them.

Windows did have smart phones back in the 90s and they practically were a miniature desktop on a phone. It was a interesting idea and concepts but no one wanted it and it was just horrible. Same thing with tablets. It was a huge flop but they were pretty much desktops with a stylce and touch interface. The problem is that is was very primitive and did not work all that well. They were to ahead for their time and now we have the technology to make tablets and smart phone in a sense mini computers in our pocket.

The problem is they are limited and will only have so much power and can do only so much. Were just now getting to the point where tablets are actually becoming a decent gaming platform but the touch interface is just way to laggy and just not all that good.

As for the question of the week. I will have to choose Shatner as he probably has  a lot more interesting stories to tell  and would keep the kid interested for hours on end. As well I think Shatner would would be more up to the task and challenge. From what I have read he really is a down to earth nice loving guy when a camera or mics are not in front of his face.

This might make me hated on

This might make me hated on this website, but the only star treks I ever really enjoyed were The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. So I have to go with Mark Hamill here. Not just because of Luke Skywalker, but because he was also the voice of the joker on the great batman animated series of the 90s (my early teen years). Could entertain my (theoretical) kids with some great Joker quotes.

To follow up on the previous winger, I just realized that my two most recent computers that I have purchased (one in 2006 the other in 2010) have been laptops. I think I might get a new desktop soon though, i still use my "newest" one (2004) quite frequently.

I'm definitely going to have

I'm definitely going to have to go with C**knocker, Mark Hamill. How cool would it be to have Luke Skywalker chilling in your house. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, K? But the guy has so much talent, and what kid do you know that doesn't like it when you say things in different voices. I think Shatner would kind of be a bore. He was recently on an episode of American Pickers and the way he talked still sounded like he was in character. He's just so one-note. So definitely Mark Hamill for the range he has. And anyway, one Joker voice when the kids misbehave = quick fix.

Who do you choose? Captain

Who do you choose? Captain Kirk or the freaking Joker?!

Personally, both are awesome, yet both are alcoholics. Do you really want them babysitting your children?

But because I am a Trekkie and really don't like Star Wars all that much, I'm going with the Shat by default.

See you Friday.

I like this question.  A bit

I like this question.  A bit different from more recent ones, and a fun hypothetical to ponder over.

I'm gonna go with Mark Hamill on this one.  He seems like he'd handle kids better.  Not sure I'm justified in thinking this, but Shatner comes off like he'd just sit in front of the TV and not do much in terms of sitting.  I think based on Hamill's background, he'd be better suitted for entertaining kids, and I think could relate better to what kids are in to.

Shatner would be more like a guy I'd go to the bar with and have a few beers, or maybe play a round of golf on a Sunday afternoon.

See. DTX... I was thinking

See. DTX... I was thinking the same thing only in the opposite direction. Mark voiced the Joker, and can laugh like a maniac. That's a strike against, not for.

However...  I don't... think... that the children... would... Take Shatner seriously... when... he told them... to... do... anything.

So instead I'm going to do what I usually do and take the cheap route out.

Being a proud Canadian, I'd leave my children in the care of anoher Canadian. Bill, get over here and watch the kids.

First off I have said the same thing looking into my coffee cup.

Babysitters... If I have kids I will not let someone else take care of them, except for their mother.

MWM, are you telling me, that after 2 years of screaming infant, there's no way you'd ever want to have even a single night out just you and her?

oh jeez thats sort of a loaded question

Would you rather Kirk in all his overly dramatic pauses or Luke Skywalker? Or do we delve deeper into lesser known roles, such as TJ Hooker or "There's...Something on the Wing!" Twilight Zone Shatner? There is also the aspect of Hamill being the Joker, and he isn't exactly a role model now is he? However when it comes down to it, I'd take the jedi over the starship captain, because he could use the force to change diapers, rock babies, etc. all whilst breaking a minimal sweat. Kirk would need to adjust his man girdle fairly often...

Well damn it all I think we

Well damn it all I think we got ourselves a possible reality show in our midst. "Celebrity Babysitter," cannot wait for the Nick Nolte vs Burt Reynolds episode. All jokes aside I don't think I would pick either I mean they are both getting up there in terms of age.

I'm going to make my pick soley on my love for Wing Commander and pick Hamil. Shat maybe next time I'll pick you and you can sing/talk my kid to sleep with Elton's Rocket Man.

Sweet intro bit with the dishes.  Will this become a regular thing with the Weekly Wringer?  Even occasionally, I would love some scripted action because when I think acting I think the Commodore.

Mark Hamill would definitely be the better babysitter.  He always seems upbeat and full of energy.  He has talked about his children and the fun he has had relating to them when he discussed about how his son got him into the Simpsons.  On a darker note, I have a pool and I don’t trust Shattner watching over the wellbeing of others around pools.

While I'm not a huge Star

While I'm not a huge Star Trek Fan, I think I would definitely go with Mr. Shatner to babysit for me. I mean, I love Mark Hamill, but he doesn't strike me as someone that would be tremendously good with kids. Bill on the other hand, is funny, entertaining, and I feel that with him, my kids would be safe, and I bet they would have a good time.

For practical reasons...

I have gotten more enjoyment in my life from Star Trek than Star Wars.  However, from a practical standpoint, I would have to go with Mark Hamill!

1. He is younger, so he could keep up with some rambunctious kids more easily.

2. He might not charge as much to babysit as Shatner.

(Then again, if he is close buddies with George Lucas, you might come home to find you have different kids. The new kids are the ones you were meant to have it the technology were available when they were born. >.< )

Personally I'd rather have

Personally I'd rather have Mark Hamill on the off chance he ever had to meet up with Carrie Fisher.

That being said, I would hope I'd be the one being babysat, and thus the time would be around the late 80's when I was old enough to at least comprehend what was happening.

If I had to take the question a bit more seriously, I think I would still choose Mark Hamill. He seems like he would be better with children, and possibly have more patience with them. Not that Shatner wouldn't, but it certainly seems to me that he would probably be shorter on patience.
