Weekly Wringer 58: The Best Movies of 2011

It's Oscar season, and more important than that, we haven't talked about movies in awhile. So today, we take some time to gather in the small room to talk about the best movies of 2011. The Commodore talks about your favorites and his own, sprinkling in plenty of commentary all the way. After that, the Commodore asks a question about all of your goto geeky foods for those late night LAN parties. Get the Diet Dew, it's the Weekly Wringer!

I would have to say Gummy

I would have to say Gummy candies. Especially ones licensed by geeky thing (e.g. Star Wars). I LOVE those. Oh, and Cherry Coke/Dr. Pepper. That's my geek food! Pizza is good too.

My condolences. I actually got mild food poisoning off of some grocery store sushi once. I no longer buy grocery store sushi unless I see them make it in front of my eyes.

Favorite geek food? Fritos. I was going to say cheese puffs because it is nature's perfect gift... but Fritos don't leave cheese residue on your fingers and are a lovely scoop-like shape perfect for salsa or various dips. Goes great with root beer and other pops too.

First of all, I guess I have

First of all, I guess I have to see Drive now. It's coming out tomorrow in the cinemas here in Germany. I only heard good things about this movie.

Now answering your question...LAN parties. I haven't been on one for a looong looong time. But it was always fun. Although not very healthy. smiley

The drinks that would get me through an intense LAN party were Mountain Dew and Dark Dog. Actually, Mountain Dew is very hard to buy here. You only get them by wholesale. So I had to drive to them and if I was lucky, they had some Mountain Dew on storage. I bought as much as I could. laugh

So talking about food now. I guess the number one would be pizza. Even you guys had Pizza during the CD-i marathon, so I think you know what I'm talking about. wink  Just making a list what type of pizza everybody wants, call the local italian and BAM! There you have your pizza. And not just one pizza. About 10-15 pizzas. About 1-2 for everybody, so that we had a solid base for the night.

Or someone would drive to the next McDonald's or Subway and order some burgers or sandwiches for the whole pack. Good times...it was fun. Unfortunately I don't have much time nowadays for such things.

Speaking about health...I'm not really sure if there is any healthy geek food. Well, it's called geek food after all.

So my favorite geek food would be Mountain Dew with some good pizza. There's nothing like a pizza with peperoni, olives and salami. Damn...I'm getting hungry...Luckily, no matter how much I eat, I wont get thick.

BTW: I like the setting of this weeks Wringer. You look so serious. wink

Captain America is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's up there with bad movies like Blair Witch Project, Kazaam and Battlefield Earth. I wanted to dig out my eyes with a dirty spoon.

The problem with the Muppets (not the movie, but in general) is that they're owned by Disney now. All of the balls they ever had were lost when Disney bought the IP, which were huge. That doesn't mean I dislike Disney, but it's like asking Martin Scorsese to make a children's movie. They're two different worlds. Jim Henson is rolling in his grave.

This week's Wringer: beer and chicken wings.

I hate to say it the last time I we had White Castles and Twinkies and we had Coke and some other weird Drink my Friend brought.

The other Geek food I have to say would be while we where playing Magic, we had Cheetoes and prentizles and for most of the time they where used as counters.

How About This?

Popcorn.

When I had LANs with my friends, sometimes we'd order a pizza, but alot of the times we just popped open (pun intended) some popcorn and put it in a huge bowl. It's the perfect food for nearly everything.

Sure, the controllers got incredibly greasy afterwards, but we were having too much fun to even notice the grease on them. Even though we would usually spill alot of it on the floor, we didn't care what happened to it.

As for drinks and whatnot, we usually got Mountain Dew, my old favorite soda, like everyone else. I've recently switched to drinking 7Up more than MD yet I don't know why.

Depends on the situation.
Drinks are easy. Soda and beer. Usually Mountain Dew. Usually cheap beer.

If it's table gaming, you can afford to be messy. Keyboards don't do well with trying to eat chips and stuff.

Table game food includes pizza, anything else the pizza guys were selling, like hot wings, then as many different kinds of chips as you can get, and whatever else anyone brings.

Computer gaming, try and get foods that are wrapped up, and not messy. Calzones. Burritos. Hot Pockets. That sort of thing. Twinkies, etc. are good for that. Pop Tarts usually show up. Anything that you can hold in one hand, don't have to put down, and won't leave crumbs everywhere.

Though, you'll also need all the usual stuff for anyone sitting out a round, or whatever. Couple pizzas should shut them up.

Captain Canada? Pffft

Captain Canada? Pffft Commodore don't be rediculous. what kind of name is that?

It's Captain Canuck! (no seriously... it's Captain Canuck http://www.captaincanuck.com/ since 1975)

As for this weeks wringer, I have a problem with this question. As my fellow gamers and I have grown older over the years, our eating and snacking habbits have also evloved. Also, my LAN / All nighter goto is different from my Tabletop goto. So I'm going to mention 3 different times / scenarios

15 Years ago both D&D, and LAN parties: Pizza & Pepsi

Present day tabletop: Iced Tea & Mead to drink, Subs or Shawarma to eat, and Trail mix / fresh fruits to snack

Present day LAN or 24 hour charity marathon >.> - Dr.Pepper & Bawls to drink, Hot Pockets / Jamaican Beef Patteis to eat, Fresh Licorice (real stuff not that red twizzlers plastic shit)

It really depends on what

It really depends on what kind of atmosphere the gaming is being done in. If it's just a group of friends getting together for the specific purpose of gaming all night, then its Pizza, Beef Jerky, and Energy Drinks. Easy.

However, if it's me and the boys getting together to have some beers before we go to the bar or something, then its Beer and McDonalds everytime. Also, in this scenario, only two games ever get played: Street Fighter 2 and Call of Duty. Or DRINK of Duty as we call it... best game ever.

Geek food? I'm more of a food

Geek food? I'm more of a food geek (insert plug to how awesome Alton Brown is). I don't cook often, but when I do, I'm often doing my best to make sure it's a real, quality meal. I'm not about the pretenses or decorum of formal dining, but food is a form of art and if I'm going to make almost any amount of effort, I'm going to try to explore that. If I hold any kind of get-together with multiple people, you can bet I'll prepare a very nice meal. You can also bet I'll be running late and probably still cooking when people get here. Really, it's part of my job as a host to make the night memorable in that way. I've made individual (but large) pizza from scratch (dough included) with a huge selection of fresh toppings, gnocchi, salads with (again) a large selection of toppings and dressings, cherry cheesecake, and more (even though I very rarely attend/host get-togethers). Even as a guest, I might prepare something.

I don't eat when I'm actively playing games. I'm not gonna get my controller sticky, or smear artificial cheese powder on a DVD case, or whatever. I might take a minute away from the game to snack, or I might take a drink, but that's about it. What might I think would be a good snack to eat quickly and cleanly at an event...? Probably bruschetta. That'd work really well. If you must take a single food as an answer, that'd be it I guess.

If I had to eat something during a game and I didn't have time, I guess I'd eat a granola bar. They taste good, are fairly filling for their size, are healthful, and if you eat them carefully can have almost zero mess. I haven't done this yet, this is a hypothetical.

Back in the day, our D&D

Back in the day, our D&D group had a kind of tradition concerning food. About 1 or 2 hours before the actual game started, the host of that day's gaming session (as in: the guy whose flat we'd play at, most of the time that'd been me) would meet up with one or two of the other players, preferrably including someone with a driving license + car. We'd then drive to the nearest supermarket and buy what we called the "Holy Trinity" of RPG nutrition: Soda, Pizza and tortilla chips. Additionally, some of the players would get themselves some bottles of energy drinks... which I never really understood. Firstly, I don't get how ANYone can drink that stuff and not throw it up afterwards, and secondly I always felt that having an exciting RPG session prevents you from getting tired in the first place. Maybe there's a difference between the GM and the other players, but I for one (being the GM most of the time) always felt like playing the whole night through, if need be, even without energy drinks. Anyway, I digress...

Nowadays, things have changed a little bit. We started to develop healthier eating habits, plus I became aware of a medical condition that forbids eating too much meat and consuming sugared drinks, among other things. Because of that, soda became water, chips became fruit, and pizza became salad, a self-made curry, healthy pasta and what have you. Might sound a bit snobbish at first, and I do miss the old Trinity, but I get the feeling that this kind of food is not only healthier for us (and our character sheets), but also gives the players a lot more energy and all-around fitness for the evening. You simply feel better after a nice salad break during your gaming session rather than just plowing through your chips and pizzas. But that's just my personal opinion. ^^

Captain Canuck? I should at

Captain Canuck? I should at least check it out, and only for $19.75 for the The Complete Edition there is really no excuse for me not to check it out.

As for the Wringer I really don't snack much when playing games, I might nibble on whatever the other people offer. However I can tell a story about Candy Canes. After Christmas of 2007 I bought a lot of Candy Canes since they were discounted to fifty cents each that they lasted to February, so ever time we played a three player game of Champions: Return to Arms each of us would have one or two. So the next year I bought some more but not as much since they were only discounted at fifty percent off, and since then I haven't seen much regular Candy Canes in stores before Christmas.

These aren't necessarily geek

These aren't necessarily geek foods per se, but there's a couple of things I've become addicted to recently that have become a part of the wide variety of treats I love to eat. They are Hobnobs and Jammie Dodgers. They're British treats, and I love them, despite living here in the USA. A friend of mine from the UK sent me some -as well as some proper British tea- for Christmas this past year since I expressed an interest in trying them. They're so delicious.

I may as well explain what they are for those like me who don't live in the UK. Hobnobs are essentially these soft oatmeal sugar cookies that are supposed to be good for your digestion. They're a bit crumbly, but I still love them. Jammie Dodgers are shortbread sandwich cookies with some kinda cherry and plum flavored jam in the middle. They're also really good. I think you can get both of them on Amazon.com if you don't live in the UK. I recommend everyone to try them at least once.

Greetings from Germany, and

Greetings from Germany, and sorry for my not so perfect english.

When I still went to school back in 2004, two of my friends and me used to waste many hours playing Super Smash Bros. Melee. And to get through the night, one of them always made chocolate muffins or he would buy pretzel dough, so we could bake our own fresh pretzels at night. With the pretzels also came two small bags, one with sugar and one with salt. We always went for the salt and also put way too much of it on the pretzels, so we had to flush everything down with coke. Man... that doesn't sound very healthy, but we didn't care.

Today I wouldn't do this anymore, because I don't want to get fat. Pretzels themselves aren't so bad, but in combination with salt, coke and muffins ... no way! We could use more healthy geek food. But I guess that would be an oxymoron. It's supposed to be bad for you.

     I hear you on Avatar,

I hear you on Avatar, Commodore. It was....just not good. I've heard it described as 'Dances With Wolves in space;' yeah, pretty much. I expect so much more out of James Cameron. Or at least, I did; not sure if I do any longer.

Also, I'd mainly like to say that the video quality is great this week! This is probably the best we've ever been able to hear you, in particular. I'm not sure what you did different, but keep it up as much as possible! Not that the other videos are 'bad,' but this one...is just so much better. Probably the best, auditorialy and visually! Keep it up!

I'm in agreement with Knightcrawler. I never eat whilst playing games. I find it uncomfortable to have greasy hands whist doing so. Heck, I generally give the mits a good ol' scrub before sitting down for a marathon gaming session.

Having to pick one, I'd probably go with fruit. I wouldn't call myself a health freak per se, I just simply like fruit. Yes, boring, I know...

EDIT: Just had crackers and dip. Forgot how good of a snack it is!

Another great episode, as

Another great episode, as usual.

I totally agree with what you were saying about behaviour in the movie theaters. It's like people just don't care or don't think about the fact, that they are sorrounded by other people who have paid good money to enjoy a movie WITHOUT stupid comments or the sound of someone talking on a cellphone. And it has definitely gotten worse the past few years. I have no idea why? Perhaps we are just used to watching movies in our own livingroom (where we can do whatever we want), so we forget common sense and how to conduct ourselves when we are among strangers? I don't know?

I didn't like Avatar either. Don't get me wrong. I thought it was a decent movie but I definitely didn't think it lived up to the hype that sorrounded it when it was released. The effects were great, the acting was what you could expect but I didn't give much for the story in itself.

However, I really enjoyed captain america. Definitely A LOT better than what I had expected. Perhaps it's because I'm not an american, but I liked the fact that he was portrayed as a 'normal' guy (with superpowers) instead of 'super-american'. It made him more human and believable (or at least as believable as a guy fighting in stars and stripes during WWII can be).

As for the weeks question: Favourite geekfood is definitely potato chips and cola. Or lots of chocolate. Pizza is also great geek food, even if you have to take a break from the game to eat (to avoid melted cheese on your cards, books or controllers).

Btw: just to clearify, I didn't exactly dislike the christmastree, I just thought it was odd that you hadn't thrown it out yet. :P. On the other hand, I'll be honest and admit that I still have a couple of ornaments hanging around. Just can't seem to find the time to take 'em down. Guess I'm the pot calling the kettle black? :P haha.

7/11!

During raid sessions when I played wow, or just in general on late nights, my favorite thing to do on breaks was to run down to the 7/11 across the street and buy snacks to keep me going.  I would always get a slurpee- usually pina colada mixed with coke flavor, a Slim Jim, and Nacho Cheese Prtetzel flavor Combos.  Sometime I would get Chili flavored Doritos (If you havent tried them, they taste oddly like chinese food).

Ramen is always a good standby, but I cannot stand the cheap stuff anymore.  Has to be one of the imported brands.  They taste way better and come in more flavors.

I also like energy drinks- NOS, Amp, Bawls are the ones i like.  Red Bull is ok, but so expensive.  Monster is passable, but Rockstar is just nasty.   Coffee is good too, but it has to be the real stuff, none of that instant crap.

I think we can all agree on Pizza as the ultimate nerd food.  It's easy to get, not too expensive, and easy to eat while playing a game.

Edit:  I just remembered Pizza rolls, those are great too.  The taste of pizza in little rolls, much less greasy and messy, but practicly lava on the inside, XD

Whenever I see someone eating nachos or a grilled cheese when they use my N64 or my NES, I freak. I guess greasy controllers are my pet peeve, so I just don't eat anything when I play. I should probably start though, cause I almost starved to death playing Skyrimsmiley

Favorite Geek Food

Hmm, what a good topic! I really love hummus actually and-

Oh, geek, not Greek.

In that case, candy orange slices. For some reason I always default to those when hanging with friends for an extended night. Those and Flipz, because I'm comfortable with my manhood. And now I'm hungry, so thank you.

...cause I almost starved to death playing Skyrimsmiley

I know that feeling since shortly after being introduced to Minecraft I was woken up by my stomach growling and the feeling of being very hungry. And thinking back to the last time I ate it was a pot of coffee, day before that a pot of coffee, the day before that pot of coffee and a snack, day before that a pot of coffee. I still play a lot of single player Minecraft but I do make a point to stop and make a meal, also I now keep several liters of water within arm's reach.
