Where's my Final Fantasy 6 remake?

Yeah, sure, it's been ported to the PlayStation and GBA, but those were more like re-releases. An FMV here, a translation tweak there, and that's about it. I really enjoyed what Squeenix did in remaking Final Fantasy IV, Dragon Quest IV, and Dragon Quest V for the Nintendo DS. So why ignore perhaps their greatest opus? In fact, FFVI's kinda been the redheaded stepchild of their game library for awhile now, with nary a mention of it... pretty much ever. I'm actually surprised Kefka and Terra were in Final Fantasy Dissidia, but I assume that was more out of a sense of obligation than anything else.
Actually, the Final Fantasy VII fanboys can relate, I'm sure. They haven't even gotten the courtesy of a re-release outside of the PlayStation Network. Square Enix, what the hell? Probably 90% of Final Fantasy fans would claim one of these two games as the apex of the whole series (citation needed), yet you completely ignore the 3D, fully rendered, voice acted makeovers they so richly deserve.
Sorry for the rant, but it's frustrating that for all the remakes out there, the one (ONE!) game that I would really love to see them take a good whack at dolling up gets the perpetual shaft (which is a great name for a rock band, by the way). Anyone else have their own white whale when it comes to this topic, or are ok with game companies leaving well enough alone?

My pessimistic side tells me that the Square side of the partnership is too out-of-touch to pull off a remake of the FF franchise successfully without making it a word-for-word retelling or complete bollocks. They'd just bugger the whole thing up and add zippers, buckles, styling gel and teenage angst.
Oh, and they would possibly "stream-line the experience to reach a wider audience." We all know what that means. (*coughtakeoutallthelittlethingsweenjoyliketownsoramapcough*)
I'm kind of glad they aren't touching anything, seeing how much of a joke their previous forays into making sequels were. (FFX-2, and some would say Advent Children. I for one would say Advent Children was rubbish.)
Well Square did announce they would be making some Final Fantasy game for the 3DS. I hope to god it's a remake of Final Fantasy V or VI. Imagining the final boss of both games in 3D just blows my mind. Actually, I'd rather see a remake of Final Fantasy V more mostly because I think it's probably one of the more underrated games of the series. Though, an FFVI remake would also be incredible. I actually didn't want an FFVI on DS before because well, I don't think the DS could do it justice. i mean I hear FFIVDS pushed some of the system's limits. The 3DS however looks more than capable of making a remake of FFVI that it deserves.
Also another question, do you think the folks who made the previous two Final Fantasy remakes for DS (Matrix Software if you didn't know) should make a 3DS remake of FFV and/or FFVI? I'd say yes because I think they did a fine job with remaking FFIII & IV on DS and the highly underrated game FFIV: The After Years. Though, the game Nostalgia did kind of disappoint me (seemed like a meh version of Skies of Arcadia), I think they can do a great job and I also look forward to playing their next game, Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light.
Let's look at the number s here.
Final Fantasy 4 has 12 playable characters, who all needed voice actors for each party member. Not to mention random villagers that got a random speaking part and importanr villans who got speaking parts as well. Not to mentio na re-edit, and redesign of a 12 hour campaign from top to bottom. Not to mention adding new content to keep the game fresh and interesting. The game was actually getting too big, so it had to be compressed to a 1gb ROM.
Final Fantasy 6 has 14 characters, all who ned voice actors (btw, most of the room on that 1gb ROM for FF4, was voice data). That's not considering other characters, like villagers and villians, who will need voice acting too. A redesign of a huge campaign (which takes me longer than 30 hours due to all the grinding). And Again the game wothh feature new content and anything else to make the game feel fresh and new. I don't think FF6 would fit on a single card for the DS.
Honestly, this is probably why Crono Trigger didn't get the 3d polygon update when it got released on the DS.
Now you can get higher capacity cards. However, those cards come at a higher cost.
I would prefer to see a remake in xbox live or psn. It seems harder to get into oldschool rpg's on the go to me.
To be perfectly honest, I think a remake of FF6 is a terrible idea. Do I want it remade? HELL YES. But I just don't have the same confidence in Square-Enix as I did Square. Not to mention, with the de facto leadership of Tetsuya Nomura, the game would simply end up a farce of what the game originally was.
I wouldn't even be content with a DS remake of it, like FF3 and FF4 got. If it isn't an all-out, balls to the wall remake, it isn't worth it. But please, please, leave it alone if it isn't treated with the respect it deserves. Not to mention, I hate hand helds.
Yes, I know I'm just tempting fate by loudly proclaiming how much I want a FF6 remake - there's certainly no guarantee it'll be any good - but I'm probably just frustrated that such a great game has been seemingly overlooked by its creators.
And Arkus, Hipermusic makes a great point. With the success of digital game distribution on all three major consoles, I'd love to be able to play a remake on my TV (I agree with Mr. K there). How great would it be to have something with the production values of FF13, but in a FF6 remake? Or hell, even a sequel (dare I say it?) But I also need to figure that the costs to make such a game on a console has to be more expensive than the DS... so I'm willing to settle.
Hey, I can always hope for something on the 3DS.
Once again I'll say that I just don't think the DS could do FFVI justice at all. Until the 3DS was announced, I supported a PSP, 360 or PS3 remake of the game. Even though I own none of those consoles, I still think the DS can't handle a full blown remake of FFVI. Hell, all the voice acting in FFIVDS apparently was pushing some limits in the DS's audio storage. Plus, I think the DS era is slowly coming toward an end with the 3DS coming out sometime soon. Plus, Square Enix themselves even said they can't remake FFV and FFVI on DS due to technical limitations. I think the 3DS is capable of doing both those games justice.
Oh and yes I'd rather see an FFV remake more. Mainly because I feel like it's one of the underappreciated games in the series much like FFIX. Heck, maybe Final Fantasy V would be a good for a 16-Bit Gem eh Roo? Not sure if it's exactly considered a 16-Bit Gem, butI'd consider it in the same group as Rondo of Blood. A game in a very well known franchise that was just forgotten. Just think about it ok?
Well, they did do a sequel to FF4 and 10 as well as some added content for 7. Now considering the history of the FF series, I'd rather see a full blown remake then a sequel.
Take Crisis Core for example. I know it's a prequel, and not a sequel, but it really fucks up the story for 7. It feels more like more like you're just a long for the ride, instead of being the actual hero. Also, what limited contact you get with Zack in FF7 makes him out to be kind of serious, while in Crisis Core he is just some random loud mouth anime character that has huge eyes and mouth when it's comicaly aproperate. The characetr renaming is awful. The new characters that are earth shatteringly important that pop up but are never mentioned again in 7 (You'd think Genisis would be still be fresh on peoples mind...kinda like how WACO still gets a mention every now and again). I could go on for an hour or more about what all is wrong with this game, but I've got other stuff to do today other than blow a blood vessel over a shitty game.
Now I haven't played other ff sequels, so I can't speak for their quality. i will say when push comes to shove I'd like more updates to old classics. If we were going to get a remake this is what I'd like to see:
-New story events. I'd likea chance to fully flesh out a few more characters, and give them more chances to shine. Really only a handful of characters shine in FF6. There is nothing wrong with that, it gives the story focus and keeps it going like it should However, if we are going to get these other characters I'd like to get more into what motivates them to continue on their journey.
-Revamped script. It's clear what type of era we are playing in, the old ways are going out and the new is coming in. I personally don't feel that struggle in the world. it seems most people don't care or are too wrapped up in themselves to notice. I'm not talking about reworking the WHOLE script. but maybe a few villagers could give you commentary on the world and how they feel to make you feel more apart of it
-A new magic/leveling system. I don't mind grinding in most games, and in this game it's not too bad, but anything that gets rid of grinding is a good thing. Final Fantasy should be about the story, not about grindan, grindan, and grindan.
-The combat should make use of whatever addons the console has. If it's the kinect, or the move, or the stylus for the DS, or wagglan the wii-mote. the controllers full capacity should be used. I think a lot of DS games are fun because they try to invent interesting ways to use the stylus for everything from character movement to the way they attack. You might remember a game called Lair, where Sony made a big deal about how you could control the dragon by shifting your controller like a steering wheel, if the controller isn't going to be used like it should be, why did we waste our money on it?
-Choices that are actual choices. This is one of those games where you are given a choice, but if you don't pick yes you're not going to progress anymore till you say yes. Remember when you are asked to join the Returners, and you can join them or not? The game kinda strong armed you into this one path and saying no just stopped the game til you said yes. When games pull this shit it's annoying and bullshit. If you want me to join the returners just have me join, don't tell me I have a choice when I clearly don't.
Thats all I can think of for the moment. Now I'm not saying I'd put in all of these changes into a FF6 remake, but these are some things I'd really look hard at when doing a remake.
It's in the same place as the Mother re-releases/remakes . . . .
In Development Hell.
Mother rereleases/remakes are not in development hell Tommy, they're in the land of video games that will never exist.
heh, land of misfit video games
I refer to it as Development Hell because there is (last I heard) a willing developer (Brownie Brown) to work on it.
Never say never as long as there is someone willing to work on it.
Have I said that I would be interested in buying the North American rights to the Mother series?
Should be cheap. It's not like Nintendo is using them.
Now, where do I get the money?
I doubt nintendo would come off the rights cheap. I'm sure tho if NoA thought was a large enough market they'd just do it themselves. That said, I'm not sure why square hasn't done an updated remake for ff6. Something like this would sell like hotcales on the VC. It just wouldn't fit on a ds card
As for games I would like to see remade is Earthbound of course, Banjo Kazooie, and Jet Force Gemini to name a few.
However, if they were to remake the games, they need to keep the original purposes of theg ames intact. For example, the platforming and colecting of Banjo Kazooie would have to stay the same simply because, thats what we grew up with and why bother Remakeing a game and adding a bunch of things when you target audience liekd it the old way.
Personally, if I can't get a balls-out remake, I would prefer:
A re-release of the 16-bit game. I like the translation of the GBA plot, but not the opera sequence text.
Lose the delay that was added to the menu selection screen and battle loads in the PS version.
A symphonic sountrack to accompany the gameplay. Replace the midi with truthfully respectful instrumentals.
Maybe vocals for the opera. Maybe.
Close the minor outstanding plot holes.
Keep the optional dungeons and add more, but find a better way to integrate them into the plot.
Maybe some interspersed PS-1 caliber cutscenes-- like when the floating island falls, when the Invincible first takes off or the Light of Justice ripping apart the landscape.
I guess that remaking a game seems great for the developers when it's a reasonably short game like bionic commando but a 40plus hour game is a whole different thing.
I actually joined this site JUST to respond to this post, and searched specifically for this topic using a search engine to see WHY and if anyone agreed with me. I personally think that there may have been some miscommunication, too: you see, they remade Final Fantasy III. I imagine they got a lot of American fans saying "I want a remake of FF3!!!!" "Remake FF3!" So, they did... but, the thing is, in AMERICA Final Fantasy VI was released as FF3, while in Japan FF3 is an entirely different game.
So maybe for all they know, they thought they were fulfilling our dearest dreams? Either way, epic fail.
My favourite Final Fantasy of all time is Final Fantasy VI - I played it long after later FF had come out, but even then it captured me. It is timeless, and amazing how even in an age where 3D games were the norm, I still found myself teary eyed with scenes in this pixelated game. Imagine what it would be like, fleshed out and remade as a full console release (not the portable ones, the real deal, like PS3!). I think instead of continuing to make all these later chapters and new worlds, they should go back to the one that really established the very idea that future games were made off of. I cannot help but think it would be a smashing success- even if it was a word for word remake (honestly, even better, less margin for error :P ) or even not super amazing, people would buy it. I don't see much to loose for them, there. It's an epic story, worth retelling with the best they have to offer. I never even FINISHED playing Final Fantasy XIII... and I only played Final Fantasy XII for a few hours! I want them to bring back the world, and characters, I loved and do it full throttle!

Dude, the only people who didn't know that live under a rock.
